Schiit Mimir - Impressions Thread

By no means do I have a very sophisticated ear but the Yggy has been my main DAC for over 4 years and I've been ABing it with Mimir for the last hour and I'm having a hard time hearing much difference..I'm sure there are many others that would pick something up in listening but it ain't easy.

Marv did say he felt Mimir was 80% of Gungnir 2, which he prefers over Yggdrasil. So that's eye opening and good news for cash strapped audiophiles. :)

Just checked on my PC at the office; Mimir shows up fine in HQPlayer:

That's a fresh install of HQPlayer on a Win11 machine with all current updates and patches, and no additional drivers or other software installed that might have a chance to interfere with audio endpoint device management or discovery. No BIOS changes, either.

Here's what the machine's Device Manager is showing for me:

Ok, thanks. It is good to see that it works on a non-compromised driver setup for Win11. I have it working on my Mac so I am happy for now. I just move the miniPC over to feed into the HoloSpring3, so I am good for now. I am not sure what the heck is going on with the WASAPI drivers on this Win11. Maybe the miniPC motherboard drivers are gimped somehow or restricted to Remote Audio only (like RemoteDesktop). I don't know. I hope someone has a miniPC and figures this out.

Ok, so ASIO4ALL doesn't support more than 192k. Got it. But, I can't seem to get HQPlayer to see Mimir as a WASAPI device, either. In my Control Panel, the DAC doesn't show up as a "Speaker", only an "Audio" device. Could this be the issue?

This is a Minisforum Intel mini computer.

Are you connecting to the computer using Remote Desktop or some similar tool? If that's the case that's why you are seeing Remote Audio and some sound options won't be available. I'd try plugging keyboard and monitor directly to computer and trying again.

Yeah I did that too. Same problem. I am going to check the startup list to see if there are any audio related items and remove them.

Mine just arrived 10 minutes ago. It shall “cook” overnight, and hopefully tomorrow PM I can do some listening. Today was all about gardening (our late spring has created some urgency as we’ve a LOT of seedlings to get in the ground and I had 2 4’x8’x20” beds and a 4’ x 4’ x20” bed to build. Involved earth moving/re-levelling and tilling of sod. Took all of Friday PM, and today from 8AM until storms stopped me at 3ish… Mimir arrived 3 minutes before a pretty bid storm cell came through, almost Texas-level rainfall rates for a few minutes. First big boomer of the year. Pablo, the driver, dropped it, rang the bell, and ran back to his truck! It’s fun their tracking app gives you driver’s name and “Life360-like” map location updates in very close to real time. Worked well today.

Tonight’s plan for marinated/grilled beef Tri Tip is looking like it’ll have to be indoors with a cast-iron grill pan, alas; had wanted to have the first outdoor grilling of the season.

Due to wiring hassles, I’m (at first) going to simply substitute Mimir “in situ” co-resident with Yggy, and just swap input/output cabling. Over a year with Yggy now, I’m pretty familiar… and this is not going to be an A/B/X exercise. Hooking it all up after dinner. May/may not do a listen. (It’ll be stone cold, so hardly fair…)

I have been on the lookout for a new DAC for the past few years and really didn't want to break the bank, but these days, that is a pretty difficult task it seems. I am coming from a Geshelli J2 ES9026PRO (Classic J2, non-socketed), which I enjoyed but it started exhibiting intermittent issues, where audio would cut in and out, and or cause a ton of distortion for a second or two, and them cut back to acting normal. This problem got worse over time to becoming unusable and about 18 months ago bought a simple SMSL DO100 "Pro".

Well, the SMSL has a huge issue the J2 never had when running from a computer (which I actually thought was a unit issue, SMSL replaced, same issue, so they just let me keep the DAC and refunded), but the issue was all sorts of USB noise which I could only clean up with a USB isolator. The Aune DAC I had prior also didn't have this issue, but besides that, the sound from SMSL not a huge fan. Definitely enjoyed the J2 more. The SMSL also injects clicking noises when bit rate changes, and that is also annoying.

Then, a couple weeks ago (just beforeI decided to buy a very simple JDS Atom DAC 2, since years ago I owned their O2+ODAC for a small, in office setup and enjoyed it for what it was, and it never gave me issues. The JDS Atom DAC 2 is quiet without the isolator, unlike the SMSL, and subjectively I think it sounds better too, but still liked the J2 more.

I then came across the Mimir post, read about it and it caught my attention. Might just be what I have been looking for, and its IMD measurements are quite impressive. This will be my first Schiit product so I am hoping for a good showing. I made the purchase on April 30th, shipping label has been created but hasn't moved yet - hopefully ill get it soon and ill be sure the share my impressions on it. Think ill probably have to pick up a cheap iOS device to give Forkbeard a try, or maybe ill just wait for the Android release (I did order it with FB).

What I think would be real nice is if they released a desktop app for FB - maybe that's in the cards, maybe its not, but I know for me (and likely many others) it would actually be the most practical use case. But either way, looking forward to trying out my first Schiit product, and definitely appreciate the fact its a USA based company.

Did you contact the Geshelli customer service? I have found them very responsive.

You'd be in for a treat! That Unison is pretty effective in galvanic isolation from any USB sources!

Let us know your impressions soon! Never had issues with Schiit DACs myself so you should be good with their quality as well!

You have to move up to the Bifrost to get galvanic isolation. No?
