Santa says I can’t open it yet…

My first impressions are.. nice box! Great label! hehe

Ok so after some digging...the Heretic measures better than the Magni+, so I would buy the Magni+ if I had to choose. Measurements<Sound

Hopefully, by the time the new Schiit is available in EU, there will be a global consensus which to buy: Magni+ or Heretic :D

Could someone point me to an explanation or discussion somewhere of the differences between the two topologies, discrete vs. opamp, pros and cons of each, and why I would choose one or the other?

If the Heretic sounded better, then it would be called the Magni+, and there wouldn't be 2 choices.

Well there are many places where you will get parts of all this...its all over the place with knowledge and opinions subjective to objective and all parts in between.
The problem here is there are so many parts and over time and how they are used in differing circuits.
Then there is the does it really matter etc...

IMO you need to get a good base understanding of what an amplifier is, what its supposed to do...and there are many differing areas to delve into.

Its not black and white.

I would take a stab and say discrete amp designs are harder to design and get running with stellar specs.
Using op amps instead of totally all discrete amp designs tend to be easier to design and make with great specs.

Other than that you need to look at some theory, basic electrical theory, take some classes, understand how they work, what classes there are etc..

There is no perfect answer here.

The final arbitrator will be your ears when you listen to differing designs...

Good luck on your journey!

This is the first post in Schiits HUGE thread, You can start reading the Schiit Story throughout the years and learn alot as well.

If the Heretic sounded better, then it would be called the Modi+, and there wouldn't be 2 choices.

Conversely, if the Magni + is by default better why does the Heretic exist and why are there two choices ?

You are aware of why the Heresy then the Heretic exist and why they are called that ?

Because it measures better

Exactly, and it measures better because it is op amp based and designed largely to measure better thus filling a market sector.

I had an original Heresy, didn't like it, I now have a Piety and like it a lot, I bet the Piety measures like schiit compared to the Heresy.

But some people want measurements so they are listening to the music "Like the artist intended" ..... how would anybody know what that is !
