Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

A short recap of the past 15 years of me trying all kinds of different printer manufacturers:

HP sucks.
All the others suck even worse.

YMMV (but probably won't)
I work for one of those companies: please print :)

This is what I grew up with:

Still almost no speaker made passes square waves as well as these speakers that debuted in 1957. Also have very low distortion performance.

That looks like a pic from the late 60's. My father had them and the same amp 1966-1972.
Had a roommate for one year, just before I got married (the first time - LOL) who had a stacked pair of those, driven by ARC all tubes pre and power amp… it was amazing sounding in the midrange and treble, but, of course no real bass and very dynamically restricted (he didn’t want pin hole burn throughs…)

You're killing the King's deer?

I still remember the day, early '60's Dad's RCA stereo/television was delivered. Six feet of electronics, with a beautiful wood cabinet.
My generation was born in the late 1950's and our Dad's got us into tube hifi in our early years. My late Dad built a Heathkit mono amplifier around 1960 and quickly upgraded to a Dynakit Stereo 70 and Pas 2 preamplifier, which he ran into an old AR1 speaker (used as a subwoofer) connected to a Janzen electrostatic tweeter. It was quite nice sounding back in the day. He eventually purchased a Fairchild 412 turntable with a Shure tone arm and cartridge. That system lasted until the early 1990's when we bought Dad a mostly British system comprised of Naim Audio gear. 👍

I love some of that old gear that was built to last. I need to finish some work on classic turntables before I can get back to older amps and tuners. I also need to build my son a turntable rack and get it over to him this summer.

On the meantime I am selling off some of my Melz tube collection so others can enjoy them, mostly just later year 6SN7 equivalents. The fun was in the discovery of some of their less available fine old tubes.

Two of the woods I will consider for phono head shells are bloodwood, and below it tiger wood (Goncalo Alves).IMG_8956.jpeg
Tiger wood has a high Janka hardness rating and is similar to teak. Bloodwood has an even higher rating, about twice the hardness of hard maple. The hardest woods tend to be the most dense and therefore the least resonant.

I heard two pair with the Sequerra ribbon with ARC D-52's and an ARC SP-10, what bass it had was fast and timbre correct, and yeah, no big dynamics.

I believe I have ffmpeg installed and working. But how can I test it? The only way I can think of is to transcode to a format the Red does not support, in which case the transcoded stream should not play. Is there a better way?

Edit: I'm pretty sure transcoding is not working. My DAC displays sample rate and the displayed sample rate never changes from the sample rate of the original file.
The minimserver forums are pretty friendly and extremely helpful: https://forum.minimserver.com/showthread.php?tid=7206

The trick with it is, as stated there, is that each file type must be listed, there's no wildcarding.
I don't transcode anymore so I can't pull a working line from my config file you. Also, do you use MinimWatch?

For the foodies/cooks out there: a spice grinder has been requested. What is that and what's a good one?

Secura makes a coffee or spice grinder that comes with two blades, I like that one and it is maybe $35 or so?

Oh and parts are here for my head shell project so I will begin later today. Someone was comfortable as I received the package.😜 I am trying 5N solid silver litz wire, I do not mind silver for such a short distance.

It bears noting that Randy got his start reviewing cheap-af mostly-Chinese gear for a crowd who chafes at anything coming even remotely close to $300. Those kinda of customers aren't really expecting much audiophile nuance because they probably don't care and would never hear those nuances on that gear anyway. Over the years, Randy has started moving a little upscale with his reviews while still striving to hold onto that 'cheap' crowd of subscribers as a base -- I think he finds a pretty good balance between those two things in the whole. I do wish he'd put a little more research into feature he is talking about but I have very little doubt about the sonic differences he is hearing and describing. That part is valuable.
As much as he has been sharing his love of Geshelli DACS for at least two years, I thought it was telling that he thought the G2 was as good as his favorite and gushed about its ability to place instruments in an aural mosaic.

This is borrowed, but I love the sentiment. Vacuum tube aficionados will get it.🤪
