Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

On the specs page for Kara F (and Kara before it) it states that the XLR and RCA outputs are selectable via front panel switch and remote. Is this accurate? I've seen no mention for this in the manual and the remote just has input select. Am I missing something, or is this a typo? I've been using XLR out to mono Ghorns since I've had Kara so never even tried the SE out, but am considering other amp options and it would be fantastic if I could actually just switch between the two.

I think they meant INPUTS.

** Nope -- more than 1 Balanced and 2 RCA inputs, so it's got to be a typo regarding outputs being selectable.

What he said. FWIW I use single-ended and balanced at the same time. Single ended drives the subwoofer.

That's what I've figured. Looks like a copy/paste error since they mentioned gazintas and gazoutas. I've just always wondered if there was some secret to holding down the right button combo.

on my Freya+, the outputs are all active all the time and I believe that to be true for all their preamps. the output mode (passive, active buffer, and tube gain) are selectable via the remote or front switch. I found this verbiage confusing as well when I bought my Freya+ but its ultimately a non-issue for me

Makes total sense. So it's more of an output mode selectable via button or remote. Should read "1 XLR pair plus 2 RCA pairs, all on at all times, gain mode selectable via front switch or remote." The selectable line immediately following the input statement where the inputs themselves are selectable does make it confusing.

When one is one with ones dog(s), words are not required....
I'm one with my cat but I still don't understand a damn thing he thinks most times! 🤣🤪

Willie as @Bowmoreman can attest makes sure you know what he wants. He's very vocal with multiple sighs, whines, barks, stares, and straight on demand for affection - and of course food.

To @ricksome: ideally, the tonearm should be non-resonant -- irrespective of mass or of shape. That way, the tiny undulation of the record groove can be purely converted by the phono cartridge into electrical signal.

Another consideration: compliance of the phono cartridge stylus assembly. If low, a higher-mass tonearm should be used; if high, a lower-mass tonearm should be used. This -- to prevent / mitigate low-frequency system resonance from interfering with low-frequency signal response.

Lastly, most tonearms have a fixed 'rotational point' which leads to varying amounts of 'tracing error' across an LP. Here is one that does not, but has other complexities: IMG_0437.jpeg Rabco SL-8.
Thank You for your knowledge and response. That Rabco SL-8 looks like it might be "Brutal" on vinyl.

J or straight generally, the critical thing is to match the cartridge to the arm so the resonance freq is 7 or 8 Hz, (compliance of cartridge and effective mass of tonearm combined). 11 Hz is the absolute most (there used to be charts available, not sure there is anymore).

Fixed headshells better than not (but you have to be able to twist the cartridge a bit in the headshell, Headshells with only one possible mounting system suck. And get a protractor off the web (pdf) to get the least tracking error with pivoted arms. By far most tonearm/TT sets don't have proper geometry (tracking error) set, even tonearms that get put on tables are often not set up with proper geometry.

Anti skating has to be dealt with, and hopefully some way to adjust VTA, but its not easy with most tonearms. And record clamps highly recommended along with a good TT mat.

Alan: Like those 6 eye Columbias!

A Rabco arm! Haven't seen one in 40+ years.
Thank You for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate theresponse.

Does anyone shout “JUDAS” before Like a Rolling Stone”?
I’ve been aware of this album, but just haven’t got around to listening to it yet.
Yes. Oops. My mistake. For some reason I thought you were referring to the movie, "A Complete Unknown." I heard "Judas" in that, for sure. Ignore me. Carry on. Gah.

I will have to listen more closely later when I’m not knee deep in vinyl, cartridges, and turntables. I have four tables operational at this point in time, I like choices.🤪

I really like to add better isolation and I try to be sure none of my records are warped. Cartridges are always well matched.
