Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I'm trying to decide on drivers at this point, leaning toward some Mark Audio 4". Although VERY happy with the Kef LS50 Metas, I do miss some aspects of the dipole magic the Apogee Duetta Sigs had, especially that deep soundstage. I was very lucky when younger, listening to an older friend's system including Quad ESL 57's with a Linn Sondek LP12
Does sound like a fun project. Me and my single driver snobbish friends prefer the Alpair 7MS. Still sorta cheap(ish).

Other questions already answered. How did the thread get so far ahead. Inflationary times indeed.

I had something like that happen with a new pair of active Linn Akudorik speakers. After trying all the things you describe and more, it turned out to be a subtle design defect that we (my wife and I) were the first clients to detect because we had the speakers in an exceptionally quiet rural environment. They had to be sent back to Glasgow for Linn to debug the problem and fix it.

Yep, it's much less noisy in the house with colder weather here since we use radiant heat.

I've got to be within three feet from the tweeters to hear the noise at listening levels. Turns out it's the integrated amp and most likely in the preamp section. It wouldn't be difficult to figure out which. I'm wondering if a repair is worth the time and money since I'm considering the move to Forkbeard.

Hmmm, Rekkr on last call.

A great product for desktop systems. Not sure why it is being last-called. Maybe either:
  • To be Forkbearded? Although I am not aware of FB plans for Modi-sized products.
  • Rekkr 2?
  • Rekkr not selling so well despite critical acclaim?
Andrew
I suspect the third reason. A lot of people went for the Gjallarhorn over the Rekkr including myself (and a 2nd Gjallarhorn followed). If you have room for a Rekkr on your desk, I think most people could also move some things around to fit a Gjallarhorn. Then there are those who want to be able to use the amp for non desktop setups as well, and the Gjallarhorn has enough power to be used in a regular speaker setup (depending on the room size). The Gjallarhorn also has a dead silent noise floor (I put my ear up to the woofer and tweeter to check) which is very appealing for a near field setup.

Kraken on last call? It just came out! Same with Kara. Curious that both are already Forkbearded, yet on the way out
Kara (non-F) makes sense, but why Forkbeard Kraken to just pull the plug?

I'm enjoying this documentary narrated by one of my favourite actors - Jeff Bridges.
Thanks for posting this @Syan25
I'd really like to watch that documentary.
Unfortunately it only seems to be available on Netflix... which I don't use.
CCR were the first band I ever saw live, so they are very special for me.
I saw them at RAH; not at the legendary 1970 concert, but in 1971.
By that time they were just a trio, as Tom Fogerty had left the band, but they were still brilliant.
I recently bought a ( hugely expensive) vinyl box set of all their studio albums- 'Absolute Originals' - which have been remastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman.
Haven't opened the box yet....

SPAM ALERT

Since there has been a lot of discussion about music servers and streamers, I thought I'd share this. If it's inappropriate for this forum please delete.

Small Green Computer who make the Sonic Transpoter streaming products is having a "Black Friday" sale. I can recommend these products - it's what I use.

So, in case you are interested:

Thanks for the post @Ableza

As a real technophobe, I have really struggled with servers and streamers... because computers are involved
I'm an analogue man!

It was quite a challenge when I was first introduced to 'streaming' music from a networked hard drive back in 2007.
It took me a very long time to get to grips with it all!

This was long before (legal) internet streaming from the likes of Qobuz and TIDAL became available.

I first came across Small Green Computer when speaking to an outstanding guy called Martin at a company called Audiostore in the UK.
I was looking to replace my ancient Logitech Transporter having been disappointed when I tried some very expensive 'state of the art' streamers about 5 years ago.
I was underwhelmed.

Martin's knowledge was astonishing and his approach a breath of fresh air compared with most 'Hi Fi' retailers in the UK.
He really understands how 'computer audio' works.
He also understood the attraction of the very old LMS ( Logitech Media Server) software.
At the time when we spoke, he thought that Antipodes Audio made the 'best' streamers, but they are crazily expensive.

His company builds and sells its own streamers, badged 'Audiostore' products which he believes get close to Antipodes performance at a fraction of the cost.
My ignorance about computers means I cannot really validate his claims and I have not listened to one.

I was very tempted to buy one, but in the end , stuck with my old Transporter.

For anyone in the UK who wants excellent advice about streamers, I can highly recommend Martin at Audiostore.

He stocks Small Green Computer products as well as Audiostore branded ones.

Maybe it didn't sell as well as they hoped for, and Jason also stated that they were going to streamline things regarding the product stack. If this thread is any indicator of our buying habits, then the vast majority of us are 2.0 and/or 2.1 channel listeners. Then there is also a portion of the community that would consider the Kraken underpowered for their multichannel setups, and would still opt for several higher powered stereo or mono amps. Who knows though, since we don't have all the information that made Schiit Audio come to that decision. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks! No Lokius in the deals, but I placed an order for another one anyway, with the blessing of my dear wife. With the uncertainty out there and the resulting plummeting Canadian dollar, it was time to do it.

<rant> Small (well, huge) request: Please PLEASE PLEASE replace the captcha at checkout with something less 2002. I had to go through ~7 pictures before the damned system would let me proceed. Training AI to recognize objects via 💩 images where 12 pixels in the next block might or might not be considered part of the object is not something that you should force on your loyal customers in 2024. </rant>*

Other than that, excited for what's been released and what's coming as Forkbeard goes deeper and wider into the product mix!

*Yes, I have ranted about Captcha before. I've always hated them.
