1000+ Head-Fier
I have my Asgard 3 back with the Gungnir MB and Freya N, now in my speaker setup. The Lokius is upstairs with the Midgard in my reading room headphone stack, so I have the Loki Mini + down with the speakers. I Mentioned in another post that I’ll get another Lokius. Hoping for Brown Wednesday!
Anyway, the Midgard has been taking up all of my headphone time recently. There’s some magic in that XLR port. So, tonight, I decided to listen with headphones in the basement with the aforementioned Gumby and friends. I really missed headphone listening with this combo. The tubes currently in the gain stage of the Freya are PSVANE Horizon Series 12AU7’s. They are fabulous tubes that really stand out when playing music through the speakers, and I haven’t rolled them out since installing them this past Summer.
I played a Cannonball Adderly track that’s one of my reference pieces and it was…meh. There were rough edges in the horns, cymbals had a touch of harshness, mids were a bit pushed back. I tried 2 different headphones, tried playing the track via a FLAC file served from my NAS via a WiiM Pro, and through Apple Music from my iPad, and it was no bueno. Not fun. Hmmm.
I then turned off the tubes in favor of the differential buffer stage. Suddenly the horns were sweet, the cymbals natural, and the mids not so recessed, etc. Funny how a tube can sound so wonderful on the big speakers but not so much in the headphones. I actually have rarely listened to music via the differential buffer on the Freya, so it’s like listening to a new amp for me this evening! I’ll swap out the PSVANEs for my favourite Telefunkens the next time I decide to listen with my headphones, and I’ll try more music down here without the tubes too.
Currently listening to some live Coltrane. Rollins is up next.
