Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I have my Asgard 3 back with the Gungnir MB and Freya N, now in my speaker setup. The Lokius is upstairs with the Midgard in my reading room headphone stack, so I have the Loki Mini + down with the speakers. I Mentioned in another post that I’ll get another Lokius. Hoping for Brown Wednesday!

Anyway, the Midgard has been taking up all of my headphone time recently. There’s some magic in that XLR port. So, tonight, I decided to listen with headphones in the basement with the aforementioned Gumby and friends. I really missed headphone listening with this combo. The tubes currently in the gain stage of the Freya are PSVANE Horizon Series 12AU7’s. They are fabulous tubes that really stand out when playing music through the speakers, and I haven’t rolled them out since installing them this past Summer.

I played a Cannonball Adderly track that’s one of my reference pieces and it was…meh. There were rough edges in the horns, cymbals had a touch of harshness, mids were a bit pushed back. I tried 2 different headphones, tried playing the track via a FLAC file served from my NAS via a WiiM Pro, and through Apple Music from my iPad, and it was no bueno. Not fun. Hmmm.

I then turned off the tubes in favor of the differential buffer stage. Suddenly the horns were sweet, the cymbals natural, and the mids not so recessed, etc. Funny how a tube can sound so wonderful on the big speakers but not so much in the headphones. I actually have rarely listened to music via the differential buffer on the Freya, so it’s like listening to a new amp for me this evening! I’ll swap out the PSVANEs for my favourite Telefunkens the next time I decide to listen with my headphones, and I’ll try more music down here without the tubes too.

Currently listening to some live Coltrane. Rollins is up next.

I won’t be going into detail about how it works exactly, you’ll have to allow us at least SOME amount of secret sauce in our products. 😁

But I’m comfortable saying this much:
In its current form, Visual Volume is not meant to be a scientific measurement tool, but a highly useful, very accurate sanity check.

But then again: we have only just started.

Broskie describes the center driver being driven 500hz and up corresponding with the original Quad's crossover frequency. The outside drivers in parallel 500hz down, hence the 6db drop in the LF output of the crossover. Since it is a dipole, i'll probably start with a simple square baffle, allowing for either orientation. The Markaudio drivers are really meant to be enclosed, which is a big reason i'm starting with less expensive ones at $36 each

I built some 1/4 wave transmission line speakers using matched Markaudio 7cm drivers, around $400 at the time. My SET amplifier drives these beautifully

That looks suspiciously like a left channel Apogee Duetta (or Duetta Sig) over there?

In Anthracite (like mine)

Can’t tell for sure, with it being snuggled down into the carpet, hiding the feet, but… ???

Was fine until work ordered me to Austin week after next, grumble, grumble, grumble.
Austin, this time of year, is fabulous… perfect weather in my experience… why the grumble?

Hey @Paladin79 .....if you hadn't yet figured out what to have for dinner, here you go! 🤣
Finnegan shared his caviar and smoked salmon. I opened some bubbly and all is well.🤪 I just have to save a turkey leg for him at Thanksgiving and we are even.🙄

Good to hear, thanks!

I grumble because I've disliked air travel since 2003 and, before then, People Express.

I haven't actually travelled anywhere (other than driving) since 2019. Haven't travelled alone since 2003 or so.

Help! I did something to cause my email inbox to overflow (OK, slight exaggeration) with notifications about this thread. How do I turn them off?
at the top there's a Watch (or Unwatch) button. You can unwatch and then watch again without email notifications.

If you never used that, I think the site automatically "watches" threads you post in.

Yup D-Sig - Guilty as charged. I bought these new, eventually driven by a Sumo Andromeda II. I switched over to mono Vidars (OG) several years ago, very happy. About a year ago I began to notice a bit of a "resonance" at around 1200hz on the right side - especially noticeable on Anne Sofie Van Otter's track on Elvis Costello's "Baby Plays Around" (for me a goto reference now). Speakers nearing ribbon replacement.... A friend in Portland Oregon running Krell Master Reference amps purchased them and they have a great new home. He'll eventually get them re-ribboned, but currently very happy.

Thanks. I can find a list of watched threads going back years and years, but I don't see any way to unwatch a thread or to disable email notifications.

PS -- the problem only started yesterday.

Definitely go to a live un-amplified music (symphony, choral ensemble, jazz group) event local to you.

Redwood Symphony, CA Bay Area, between San Francisco and San Jose. Seating capacity ~350
I used to go to symphony concerts fairly often, between the Central Oregon Symphony and the Oregon Symphony, but I've allowed myself to fall out of the habit in recent years for too many reasons that are far too lame. TIME TO END THE COMPLACENCY!!! 💪🏽

😀

One of my favorite venues.IMG_8617.jpegIMG_8618.jpeg
Walking distance from my son’s house. The only National park dedicated to the performing arts, one can hear the National Symphony there.
Stunning! 🤩
