Acquired ONE of these red bases for my se-40 way back in the day, but she committed suicide by jumping out of her box one day during a move - and all the magic smoke was let out. Se-40 long since gone (manually biasing with a PC hard drive harness and meter? No thanks).
I still have a half dozen various 6sn7s I am seeking equipment for. Kinda backwards I know, but is what it is.
Tubedepot has a pretty sweet deal on these if you need 6DJ8/6922 adapters. 5670W + adapter for $25. I just bought a pair from them to try in Freya-N, and bought another matched pair on the 'bay for $19.
N.B., the adapters for 5670 to 6922 from Garage 1217 can be used in reverse… So, using this adapter, you could plug a 6922 into Vali 2++ or 3… sounds weird, but it works… (…and there go @bcowen and @Ripper2860 frantically playing connect the dots with 5670 & 6922 pinouts )
Yea yea yea, I know. Even got the garage 1217 adapter's eBay page up in a browser window.
But my Multibit Asgard3 gets little enough play time, so NEED vali3 like a whole in the head.
Vali3 is cheap as chips as they say, but focused on getting my Dad's old Vandy 2s running with the GS2, with really an amp the last thing and maybe some fresh headphones for HIS Asgard. The headphones amp so nice, I bought it twice - actually thrice but that didn't end well.....
It's much the same with the Fotons, although their sonic decline starts in exactly 1960 where the Melz are good at least into the mid-60's. IMO, of course.
Tubes must be just like wine… they have good years and bad years, they improve with their age (at least it is perceived), and the price always goes up with age regardless of type
Oh, and as soon you open the bottle, the value quickly declines
Deviating from my normal Jazz recommendation tonight. I'm enjoying this so much, I thought I'd share with my Schiity friends. Gotta love LRB and John Farnham.
(I'll be back to Jazz tomorrow )
* This is the only place where telling someone their system sounds like Schiit is paying them the highest compliment.
Being from Melbourne (mostly) I have had the chance to see John Farnham a few times. Before his "comeback" solo career with Whispering Jack, he was leading up LRB and they were playing small (think pub size) venues around the place. Freaking awesome gigs as these guys really knew how to play.
A few years back (schiit, make that about 20 ... yikes!) we went to see Birtles, Shorrock, Goble (OG LRB members who lost the LRB name rights to Wayne Nelson - who now tours as LRB but I think is banned from Australia ) play a show in Melbourne. It too was amazing and they recorded a DVD of the show of which I have a signed copy.
For me, Syn is awesome. For background it replaced an XMC-1 (after it replaced a number of AVRs over the years).
I wanted a a few outcomes:
- Centered dialogue
- "Ambient" surround, bring the soundstage forward and past the seating position
- Subwoofer output
- significant size savings as trying to build a system that takes a LOT less space, and had the XMC-1 and Freya+ running the stereo side of things, cables, space etc
The ability to run Syn in "stereo + extra" for music is a bonus. And I usually have it it in full process mode, providing a center and ambience for even 2 channel.
The sub channel is well judged, and rolls off sharply. I can easily integrate by ear.
The width control is great to focus center for movies, and for headphones provides that "crossfeed" effect without it being a crossfeed. Depending the material it's also a great tweak.
AFAICT it's transparent.
Everything Jason said in the chapter holds true for me
Chain for me is usually Node 2i > Bifrost 2 > Freya+ > Syn > Lokius > AMPS or Asgard 3
