I was going to say “Been there, done that” but I only got the Rye and the Wheat. Nice job on the Bourbon. It gives me somehting to shoot for.

They all cost an arm and leg unfortunately. I've been enjoying the RCA Red Base 5692s though for preamp purposes
Quite a few do, Bill likes Fotons and for the price they can be a very good buy if you can find them. I will let others jump in but there are few 6sn7's and equivalents that I have not evaluated at one point or another.

2 toob questions:

What are the closest equivalents for the 6SN7?
What are the best performing 6SN7s / equivalents that don't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks in advance,

Noob
In addition to what others have already posted, 7N7 and 6CG7. Both require adapters but both are identical electrically to a 6SN7, just in different base and/or bottle formats.

Wow...memories...I did this crazy stuff for 20+ years!
At VIR...GSXR 750.
Had 30+ bikes over the years, rode the first year new model GSXR 600 at Daytona..
Back part, could hold the throttle open for 45 sec or so...157 real vs 165 indicated.
Boy those were the knee draggin days!!

I still need to try 6CG7's and 6J5's (had a sale lined up that fell through on Brimars), but I do enjoy VT-231's (RCA Grey Glass are very warm and lush). Melz are great but a discussed, pricy, and can test your tolerance for upper register brightness (they are closer to Ken-Rad's and Sylvania's). For some reason I have yet to try the CBS Hytron or 7N7 Frankentube I have...soon

Lots of great descriptions of NOS 6SN7's on Brent Jessee's site as well. You can find a sound signature you like, and if you want to gamble, can try to find on eBay for lower prices.... https://www.audiotubes.com/6sn7.htm

I would not agree on upper register brightness on Melz if you listen to the golden era tubes. 70’s and 80’s versions yes.😁 They were manufactured for four decades.

I will try to back to back the 50s and 80s ones and see! I'm usually rolling after a week, not within listening sessions. Lokius helps as well, without losing other magic properties.

Welcome to Texas. Enjoy the, ah, "weather."

Edit: last night in Corpus it went from hot and muggy to cool and breezy and dry (Texas style dry, Corpus style breeze--think 20-30mph winds) to torrential horizontal rain for about 15 minutes, to an insane sunset and still kinda cool and dry to next day hot as balls...)

You can certainly form your own opinions, I have my own as well as those from 50 people in my study. 🤪

I will not try the 14 year old for a bit but the ten year old 10 Tin Cup is so smooth!

Any news on the Kraken?😁
Now targeting the 30th. See Jason's Law.

Better to be perfect than fast, or rich than dead, or here than there, or something like that...crazy times.

Tubedepot has a pretty sweet deal on these if you need 6DJ8/6922 adapters. 5670W + adapter for $25. I just bought a pair from them to try in Freya-N, and bought another matched pair on the 'bay for $19.
Tubedepot in Canada is similar and avoid extra shipping import taxes in Canada - for the tube, I cannot find the adapter listed.

Happy Tubesday to those who celebrate...

This week it's a PSVANE CV181-T MKII, with a internally crooked 1960 RCA 6080 in my work desk location

Source btw is Pi2AES LITE via BNC to RCA to Bifrost 2 OG

Checking out the new Marisa Anderson/Jim White album...splendid

Wait, that's a picture of a PSVANE CV181-T MKII? It doesn't look like my PSVANE CV181-T MKII.

Glad to hear! As with before, I made the same selections for myself so perhaps I will open the same tonight!

And perhaps some more strategic 5998/6080 rolls are in order with the Melz, sent you a PM.
