Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Upgraded the firmware on my Bifrost 2 and am now listening in NOS mode. It's not better than the DAC's own filter. It sounds slower, somehow.

Edit: they made the LED pulsing very subtle. I thought it would be annoying, but it's not.

I have to admit I almost lost my Schiit with indignation, but I strangely felt like we could speak out and Jason would see reason... but I read the fine print and I realized that he fooled me and yet again Schiit is truly special and awesome.
Worry not, my friend. Your sixth sense, the sense of humor, is intact. Some times we just need some one to turn on the light for us to find it. :beerchug:

New Bifrost 2 firmware is up!

Remember, you need a MicroSD card formatted in FAT32. Modern Windows won't even give you the option to format in FAT32 (it's a very old standard), so you may need a program like Rufus to do it for you.

UPDATE: I have successfully updated the firmware on my Bifrost 2, and the pulsing light indicating NOS is working!

Even though my MicroSD card was already formatted in FAT32, it didn't work the first time. I had to reformat it using Rufus with 32KB cluster size selected as per instructions, before the BF2 saw the new firmware and applied it.

Or you can use command-line in Windows by going to command prompt and typing -- format /fs:FAT32 <drive letter followed by a :> /q (for quick)

ex: If your SD card is drive G: then at a command prompt type: format /fs:FAT32 g: /q

I flashed 1 of my BF2s and gave NOS a try. Gotta say that I like having the megacomboburrito filter in-play better than NOS, but then again, I'm not using HQPlayer to roll a DIY filter.

don't seem to be having luck.. perhaps it flashed?! Holding the input selector starts cycling through the inputs, never see a pulsing, guessing it isn't flashing.

I had the same experience. How can you tell if it's applying the new firmware? The power-on sequence is identical to what has been happening before.

Curious.

Windows seems to offer different selections depending on the capacity of the card. My Windows 10 laptop gives me a FAT32 option for 2 GB and 16 GB cards (even defaults to FAT, not FAT32), but only NTFS and exFAT for a 64 GB card.

It will start the normal cycling of the lights, but then blink them in other patterns for a while before returning to the normal cycling and then stop with one input selected when it’s done and started up ready for use.

There’s a video of it here:

Thanks! My Bifrost 2 does not behave that way. I've used a 2GB card and a 32GB card with the two files in the root directory. Both had been freshly formatted.

I'll contact the factory and see what options I have.

If you're using a program like Rufus to format the card, make sure the settings are as follows:

Obviously the drive letter may be different on yours, but the two key settings to focus on are File system, and Cluster size. You'll also want Boot selection set to "Non bootable".

I always use this official gizmo, for all my SD card formatting. It's from The SD Association https://www.sdcardformatter.com/download/

I have formatted two different cards on three different operating systems: Windows, macOS, and linux. All using FAT32 and 32k cluster size. No difference in behavior.

Current conclusion: I have a faulty Bifrost 2.

Also make sure the card is inserted fully and correctly. Otherwise it might not find it and just start up normally.
