Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to me it looks like the Pi does not actually fit into the small Schiit case, at least not length-wise. The Pi might be the same length (edge of board to edge of I/O sockets) as the Schiit case's outside dimension's depth, but it looks to me as Pi might just about be one to two millimeter (about 40 to 80 thou) too long to fit inside the case.
Could be a perspective thing with the photos, but seems like it wouldn't quite fit.
(Don't have a Pi at hand to check this myself. I've always been more of an Arduino guy. 😁)
Mounting Pi rotated by 90º would fit, but then you have to deal with the existing on-board ports somehow.
Making a slightly larger case would neither be feasible for what this is, either. That would also mean that it wouldn't stack as well as intended, which would kind of defeat the whole appeal for such a case to begin with.
Using a Modius-sized case would allow for more flexibility and expandability, but it's probably not the form factor that most who use Pi streamers would look for, I am assuming.

Oh, and if anyone wants to go the Sys route and home-brew something themselves; make sure to add vent holes to the bottom or sides, and to the top. Pi doesn't get super hot, but these little cases are sealed better than one might think, so a little bit of air flow can't hurt.

Mmm. The photos don't show it well, but it would just fit using the Argon board. The USB etc sockets extend flush to the rear face. However, if Schiit were to design drop-in case it would not be hard to rotate the board and pull different sockets to the rear.

In fact, for cheap'n'cheerful it might be possible to leave a gap in the rear of the case and just make judicious use of cables with appropriate right-angle plugs.

But yeah, the Pi is a precise fit in that orientation. Not a lot of wiggle room.

As for ventilation, aluminium makes a good heat sink...:smirk: And from experience, streaming OSs don't use a lot of resources, the Pi doesn't heat up all that much. But airflow is still a good idea. Maybe use an old Magni case instead. I just used SYS as an example because it's only $50.

Having played around with a few Pi cases, including the Argon, which I will agree is probably the best available right now, they do run a little hot. If I were modifying the Sys that I have, I would consider taking it into work and maybe seeing if can get the Pi logo machine into the top for a little ventilation, maybe with a heat pad to help pull heat into the bottom chassis.

Pis can run hot. I've got one running Docker containers including Home Assistant and Pi-hole and it does run warm. But the Pi running Volumio runs quite cool.

My respect for Rust-Oleum just went up several notches for actually naming a color Carolina Blue. 😂

Finnegan texted and approves of the NFT as long as it stands for 'No Freaking Time' for human shenanigans. **

** If Toonces can drive, why do you think Finnegan couldn't text?

They didn’t name it, I’d wager. But they probably paid for the privilege.

Did anyone notice that Gungnir just got a $100 drop in price on Schiit.com?
That's because it doesn't have VCXOs anymore, only VCOs. We can't get them. There are no ship dates. From anyone. For any option.

People in backorder will be getting notices soon, but basically you can take one with VCO-only clock regeneration now (with an "L" serial number to indicate the different firmware), or wait indefinitely. It's not just VCOs. No more AD5781BRUZ are in the pipeline either, so Gungnir is going on indefinite hold after this run is gone.

Bonuses: It's $100 off, it's available now, and it sounds the same to us.
Negatives: It doesn't have VCXOs anymore (so maybe nervosa, but this is truly silly. At least IMO.)

looking forward to the chapter on Modius E's development...

and does the price drop on Gungnir MB using AD5781 indicate that a TI-based version is to be available soon?

Here's the chapter: It's a Modius with ES9028 and USB-C. A great, inexpensive DAC with AKM is now a great, slightly more expensive DAC with ESS. Oh, and people in backorder who ordered a Modius at the old price get a Modius E at the old price ($199). Unless they don't like ESS or something. That's it! Whee!

No on Gungnir--see above--a limited run without VCXOs, then indefinite hold. There's no "Gungnir LIM" coming, I'm afraid.
