Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

re: Yggdrasil and Gungnir

The Yggdrasil was the first Schiit DAC I ever purchased. Until it came out I was a dedicated user of tube-buffered DACs, with the three in my systems at the time being from Wavelength and Kora. But I was using a Schiit Lyr headphone amplifier and I knew Mike Moffat's work from Theta and Theta Digital and I used to lust after the Theta Laserdisc players and DACs from the 80's and 90's, so when I read what Mike had to say about Yggdrasil I knew I wanted one. And I was blown away by it. It was smooth and pure, turned digital bits into sweet analog music with none of the harshness I normally associated with solid state DACs from companies like Ayre and Benchmark and other companies I had owned and tried. After a side-by-side comparison with both my Crimson and my Hermes II DACs, I found I preferred the Yggdrasil in both cases. And not by a slim margin. So the high-end tube DACs were sold and Yggdrasil replaced them. I was using a Wavelength Brick for my headphone system but didn't really have room for another Yggdrasil... and just then Schiit released the Gungnir Multibit version and the Mjolnir 2, so I jumped on them replacing the Brick and the Lyr. Wow, a much better sound. Then because I could I compared the sound of the Gungnir MB to the Yggdrasil in my headphone setup and found that I preferred the Gungnir's slightly warmer tone. Not by a lot, but enough for me to notice. Hmm, I thought, what about in my 2-channel system? So I toted the Gungnir into the stereo room and compared it to the Yggdrasil there, and found that the detail and accuracy of Yggdrasil sounded better. Not by a lot, but enough for me to notice. So that's my opinion: I prefer the Yggdrasil for music in a 2-channel setup, and I prefer Gungnir MB for headphones. Is one better than the other? Only your ears can know for sure. For me, I liked them both but for different applications. As always, YMMV.

Great writeup and comparison. Thanks for sharing!

Here is my suggestion for VIdar buyers after only listening for about an hour or so.

While the volume levels will be lower in monoblock mode, do yourself a favor and stay away from Se and one Vidar if you can afford it.

Its not close in terms of overall audio quality.

My setup: Freya , Yggy, two Vidars,Auralic Aries (using Aes) and Kef Ls50's .Cabling Mogami Studio ,Kimber
Do you have a Ragnarok and if yes can you compare them?

How do you have the speakers plugged into the back of the Vidar amps? Is the speaker positive plugged into the top right binding post and the speaker negative plugged into the top left binding post?

I just replaced the screen on my 1520. After that little TLC it's still going strong!
Yes, I love it. W10 mobile is the only app I need. Everything else like this page runs fine in the browser.

Take off the pictures.
Your address is readable.
I'm used to the old low resolution site. If you're ever in Florida you know where to stop in for a beer.

Ok, get two and use your Rag as a pre.

For all reading this thread: Most definitely give them room to breathe. I'm used to hi bias mode on my JC1's so that's ok. My initial feeling is Jason would sell more of these with a 1 placed in front of the 6! Impressive. Not the same depth behind the speakers I'm used to but wow! Jason, if you're out there take a bow. Going to live with them before saying more and the other amps I've tried. Buy two, go balanced and don't look back.:beerchug:

No the + on the top is on the left ,thats where i have the + from the speaker connected. I have the - from the speaker connected to the top right terminal . That's how the directions show it.Am I wrong?

You're doing something wrong, monoblock mode should be 5-6db louder than SE mode.

From the manual:

1 and 2 Speaker Outputs. When using Vidar as
a mono amp, connect your speaker to the two
top red terminals only. Right is “+”, and left is “-”.
Please note both of these are active outputs—do
not ground one of them!

Sounds better though eh? Hmmmm.

From the back view, the physical left binding posts are the right channel. Those are the right side binding posts regardless of how you are looking at them. Kind of like the left blinker on your car is the left blinker no matter where are looking at it from.

It seems you have it wired up correctly. You are using XLR interconnects, right?

I don't see anything wrong. Speaker + is connected to + top left side of the monoblock speaker terminal where it says ++ and the Speaker - is connected to the top right speaker
terminal on the monoblock that says + - Each speaker gets connected the one monoblock.

Thats correct right?
