Looks like this thread has struck the mother lode of soldering humour...

A few prototype shots:

Lyr proto cobbled together from Valhalla and breadboards--the first working topology.

An early Lyr prototype--note the multiple pots and flying parts on the board.

The first shippable Lyr.

Lyrs on our "hillbilly antistatic system" (foil and ground.)

Workbench, circa Lyr era.

Rina listening to some of the first run of Lyrs.

Lyr proto with the family.

Me in the garage, Lyr era. Bonus large tortoise at feet.

Bonus: how Mike measures temperature (not with fingers.) Probably an early Gungnir analog board...

My son did the worst one of all a few years back.
I was soldering, he walks up beside me and plunged his finger into my solder pot full of molten solder!
We were both freaking out and I screamed "why did you do that?"
He said "I was wondering if it was hot."

Holy crap, couldn't you have just asked?

The finger was red and sore for a couple days, but it could have been much worse.

Uh, there's a random tortoise that lives in your garage?

You can thank the leidenfrost effect that he didn't lose his finger... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidenfrost_effect
(or just look up the mythbusters video where they stick hot dogs into molten aluminum)

We have strange pets. He was probably awake for a while (he hibernates from November until April, normally, but there's usually a hot spell around January in SoCal.) This is more his usual turf (after a nice lunch, it looks like...)

Wouldn't this only be the case if he had been sucking on his thumb before he dipped it in? I mean, he would have to have quite a bit of moisture on his finger to make the vapor layer, I would think.

That's cool. I didn't think it was legal to have large tortoises as pets. (way too cold up here in Canada for them anways)

Just the moisture inherent in the flesh is enough. If you have hairy fingers though, the vapor cushion is greatly diminished (since the hair will act as a wick).

Seconded. Also, Loving the turtle. Awesome stories so far!

Pffft turtle,
Don't diss the animal man, that's a sulcata if I'm not mistaken.
Owned a smaller one myself for many years, superb animal.
