My guess is there just isnt room for the form factor. The reasons that I can think of:
I have a hunch that at least one of them could be in the neighborhood of being right. Or maybe a mix of them. Or it was for an entirely different reason altogether. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Space constraints. The board is already pretty packed, adding a relay ladder would require additional space for a 3.3V power supply, a microcontroller, the microcontroller's support circuitry (i.e. a bunch of resistors, capacitors, and relay driver ICs), relays, and the resistors for the ladder itself. All in all somewhere around three, maybe four square inch in surface area, plus the tracing to connect it all.
- Mjolnir 3 has two entirely separate power supplies, one per channel. Having to add a 3.3V power supply for the microcontroller would mean that you would have to tap into one of those two supplies, potentially introducing an imbalance in power delivery capability and/or noise floor between the two channels.
- Mjolnir 3 is entirely analog, there's nothing digital on the board. Lyr already required a microcontroller for other tasks, adding the relay ladder didn't add a ton of otherwise unnecessary development complexity.
- The Alps pots are good enough for most human ears in terms of channel balance. And they're not stepped, which some might consider preferable in a headphone amp because it provides finer-grained volume control especially when driving very efficient headphones.
Bonus (at least for me):!
(Although, to be fair, the relays that Schiit usually uses are Japanese, as well.)
- Since Mjolnir 3 is the (spiritual) successor to the first two Mjolnirs, and since it was meant to be an entirely analog product, the idea to use a relay ladder may simply never have come up along the way.
I figured as much. I also imagine if the MJ3 takes off, that Jason might consider it for MJ4.My guess is there just isnt room for the form factor.
I would consider northern Florida, maybe the Panama City area. That way maybe some folks from Georgia would make it.Depending on the date, I would plan on attending.....

I'm finding I would like a little more control. Good volume for me varies between about 7:30 to 9:00. Feels like not enough granularity. (eta mini-c)

Somewhere way down on my long and ever growing list of things that I want to build for myself is an external relay ladder that I can stick between my Lokius and my headphone amps. Maybe even balanced, who knows. Put the headphone amp's pot to 100% and use the external relay ladder box for attenuation instead.I figured as much. I've used a Freya S like this in passive mode.Somewhere way down on my long and ever growing list of things that I want to build for myself is an external relay ladder that I can stick between my Lokius and my headphone amps. Such an external relay ladder attenuator box is probably too limited of a product to be interesting for Schiit, though.
Awww Come on! A little bit of audio gear should be easy-peasy lemon squeezie.

That would be MJ5, 4 is that bad number.I figured as much. I also imagine if the MJ3 takes off, that Jason might consider it for MJ4.
I suggest the Tallahassee FL area. Interstate 10 runs through it, it has many hotels, and an airport serviced by major airlines.I would consider northern Florida, maybe the Panama City area. That way maybe some folks from Georgia would make it.![]()
