Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Are there any pictures of the press in feet? I'm glad to see that Schiit has moved to something a bit more permanent. The sticky feet are always a bit of a pain. :p

Also, the Jotunheim looks really interesting. Definitely interested in grabbing it at some point as a nice work dac/amp.

And of course, a great chapter as always. :)

@Jason Stoddard - Do you have specs for running Jotunheim into 8 ohm loads?  It looks good for a 3 or 4 watts at least, from the 16 ohm and 32 ohm specs. Or does current limit kick in and spoil it?

Don't do it. It's not a speaker amp.

Y'know, I think I actually have an 8-ohm vintage headphone in my collection somewhere... with volume knobs on the side and everything!

That would be fine.

But to think that the relatively small output stage of this amp can survive when connected to highly reactive loads...shudder. Yeah, it might survive with small speakers, but as soon as you say, "Hey, it might drive some speakers," someone is going to hook it up to their Cerwin-Vegas with four 15" woofers per channel. Then boom. And we're the bad guy.

If something can drive speakers, we'll be very clear about it. Other than that, "headphone amp" = headphone only amp.

Hey, you know what would be a cool product?  A combo headphone amp/SPEAKER amp!  Maybe with enough power to drive actual room-sized loudspeakers to meaningful levels!  Yea, let's see you do that!

Err...

It has been strongly advised the customers do not perform the modular changes I believe.

That would be a drag. Shipping back and forth to Schiit from the east coast or even further would kind of ruin the value of the add in board. Probably a better idea to try to predict what you feel you might need down the road and order it that way.

Not gonna lie... I want to see someone actually do this and set their amp on fire. Make it a contest: whoever makes the most spectacular boom gets a replacement amp. All other entries are outta luck.

Other Installation Options
If you’re an experienced electronics technician or engineer who is familiar with ESD precautions, or work with a good tech, you can choose to have the Bifrost 4490 board sent to you directly, fully tested and protected in an antistatic bag.

Please note that by selecting this option, you are saying, "Yes, I am, or know, a competent electronics technician who does not need hand-holding for this installation, and I will not allow an inexperienced person to perform the upgrade, since I understand there are no user-serviceable parts inside."

As I've mentioned before, any dismissal of the "no user serviceable parts inside" disclaimer (printed on the product chassis) means we have just ensured the lifespan of the company is finite.

It's like this:

1. A guy gets the idea that it'd be kool to swap the fuse for one of those shiny gold-plated nanocrystal doodads that cost a bunch of money.
2. He opens up the product...while it is still plugged in...while he is in the bathtub.
3. His next of kin contacts us and lawyers happen.
4. Lawyers do a forensic audit of everything we've told every customer (including emails, forum posts, etc).
5. If we ever implied that it was cool to open up the chassis in any way at any time, all support for your Schiit products cease because the company no longer exists.

So, yes, there are "no user serviceable parts inside," and that is why any upgrade cards are intended to be installed by authorized electronic service personnel only. That will include these cards, when we get around to listing them on the site. (For now, let us walk rather than run, please.)

That doesn't mean that someone won't (a) figure out how to swap the cards, and (b) put a guide up online. But that's not us.

Absolutely, I entirely agree with the thought process and principle behind being adamant about that sort of thing. I live in Europe too meaning it'll be even harder if I want to swap cards at some point but regardless of that, having them be advertised as user replaceable would be a recipe for disaster, anyone can see and understand that surely.

Congratulations on the Jotunheim by the way, given the chapter you wrote two pages back you've come a long way with the design and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.
