Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Yeah I don't let robots choose my music for me. It's indeed a PITA in some ways to collect and play records but also sometimes more rewarding.

That's why for digital I have no problem getting a big SSD and "collecting" flac files. A walk in the park compared to vinyl! With Unison from my media server into an Yggy LIM I get stunning sound.
I can only hope the SSD isn't that big. And every 30-60 minutes you have to open the case and hot-swap another drive.

Sorry in advance for the YouTube video spamming, but…

…if I end up deaf by the end of today, it’ll most assuredly be Dorothy’s and Schiit's fault and absolutely none of my own.

In somewhat related news:
Qobuz' long-standing—and for reasons beyond any sane person's understanding also continuing—utter ineptitude to properly separate artists of the same name is nothing short of infuriating.

Oh, and the epilogue to her Dark Nights video—which in and of itself is always a hoot to watch for a long list of reasons—is a misophonia-suffering, ultra-revealing-Schiit-gear-using, planar-magnetic-headphone-wearing person's worst nightmare, and I'm so here for it.

You're welcome.

yeah, while I use apple music to host most of my music in the cloud now rather than some hard drive, I'd hardly call it passive or uninvolved to manage a massive, meticulous library

full albums are great (heck, I love vinyl), but the ease of use and depth of streaming is its own rewarding process

Disambiguation is a wonderful thing. If Qobuz would hire me, I could add an internal primary key to the metadata so that the UI could give you options to select for these artists. That would be a fun database to play in.
Not familiar with Dorothy the Band, will give her a listen.

For sure. I took Lobal's post to be more about algorithmic streaming, not so much the act of streaming a file from the cloud from your own library. That's more what I was commenting on.

I'm not a Pi guy myself, so "let it be known" that I don't know my ass from my elbow when it comes to designing Pi hats.
That said—and because absolutely no one asked—here are my thoughts on the idea:
- Sounds like a neat idea on paper.
- Probably super niche, though. Not sure that enough people use Pis as audiophile-grade streamers (read: a large enough market of potential Unison-hat buyers) for the r'n'd that'd be required to get this to the usual Schiit-level of quality to pay off, especially not considering the price point I assume the average inhabitant of that particular niche would be willing to pay for a Pi hat that's in essence "just" a super-limited-in-scope-but-exceptionally-capable-in-that-one-single-thing-it-does USB controller.
I would buy Unison Pi hats in a heartbeat, along with appropriate Multibit Dacs for the 4 zones in my home / shop. I'm currently running a Pi2AES hat into my Yggy; I prefer it to a direct USB connection.....

I'm a total Pi nerd - with 3 additional Pi 4's running Home Assistant, a combination DNS server / VPN firewall for remote office access, including IP Phone, a controller for a DIY 3 axis mill

Yes, ssd part aside (before going to Roon I ran 4 pi streamers with a hd attached to each throughout the house), though for me it's less about music choice than artist support. Bandcamp gives them the highest portion of revenue, especially on the one day a month where they get all of it... need to see what changes under new ownership but it is the best method to compensate them. Spotify, et al are an abomination to me.

Oh, be careful, please. You're liable to ignite a whole 'nother level of Audiophile Debate: German Objectivism vs. American Subjectivism (it's the adjectives which raise the bar).

I'll bet that new Denon CD player would help.
Would that be the new Denon DCD-900NE? It looks very, very nice but I like the Marantz CD60's looks (in silver/gold) even better! Not that I can afford either one right now, LOL!

I don't think we should be using those words together like that. ewww!

Well the Slingbox was a popular device for streaming, maybe instead go with...Schiit Slinger?

Yet another artist to follow, thank you. Her voice reminds me of 49 Ford.

Question for the thermionic valve experts: are these still available: 35W4, 12BE6, 12BA6, 50C5, 12AT6?

If not, are there "modern" equivalents currently available?

No, I was referring to this Denon player, the player which can restore data lost in the recording process:
It might be a good time for the Urd...

This launch comes following analysis from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which reported that in 2021, shipments of compact discs rose for the first time in 17 years – the first time CD sales were on the increase since 2004. Manufacturers are now responding with the launch of new players.
