Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I love IKEA furniture! I have several kallax pieces that have survived a few moves. And if it breaks it costs very little to replace. Plus I’m one of the few people who actually enjoy assembling them. Yeah, I’m a little weird that way. 🤪

Lyr+ looks interesting to me if only for the volume control upgrade. I still have my sights set on Tyr. Unless there’s something else to tempt me.

I’m of two minds on upgrading to the BF2/64. It’s such a great DAC that I don’t really feel like I need to upgrade. On the other hand, it’s only $300 for “better”.

I guess I’ll wait a while, read the reviews, and probably do it in a few months.

Ok, I've bought the 2/64 upgrade.

Everyone who’s heard it says it sounds better. I know that the subjective side is gonna be discounted by a whole buncha folk, no matter how big and double-blind our comparisons are. But this is wayyyyyyy different than the Yggdrasil flavors, where we couldn’t even get a consensus between me, Dave, and Mike. This one is far clearer. If you believe in subjective stuff. If you believe we aren’t fooling ourselves.
Exciting stuff! Does the single ended output benefit from the same level of improvements as balanced out?

Does it reduce to a Bifrost 1/32?

Laughed entirely too much at this.
(Actually 3.5, but Word.)

Aaaaand this. Gosh I detest Word's autoformatting.

I've been mulling getting a BF2 for a couple weeks and while I'm a little bummed that it'd now cost an extra $100, I'd definitely be more bummed in a FOMO/nervosa sort of way if I got one along with my FV and now had to either wonder or to spend another $300 so soon after. Glad I sat on my wallet for a while.

Also, while it's not unique among the other Schiit upgrades, this section for board-alone site stands out: "For out-of-warranty Bifrost 2s, this re-activates the warranty on the complete product for 2 years. " That's for an at-home, self upgrade. That's super cool of you. All the more reason for the established fandom of Schiit as a company.

Crappy photo of Lyr+ at the Texas Audio Roundup. We'll get you some real photos shortly.

That's a really cool stamping you've produced. Nicely done.

Yeah, same here. It's like Lego for responsible adults. FWIW, most of the occurrences I've seen of issues with Ikea furniture being fragile can be traced entirely to poor assembly. One needs not to be @Paladin79 levels of woodworking, but some care does need to be taken. I have plenty of Ikea furniture that's lasted many moves, but I'd be extremely hesitant about buying any secondhand.

Good question!

Can the original Bifrost 2 board still be swapped back in once the 2/64 firmware has been applied?

(From what it sounds like, it's unlikely that anyone would ever want to do that, but just out of curiosity.)
I will check with Dave, but I believe it will require re-installing the old firmware, but there shouldn't be anything to keep you from doing this.
@Jason Stoddard, I have two questions:

1) If I upgrade my current Bifrost 2, will I be able to use it in NOS mode?
2) If I install the upgrade and don't like it, can I re-install the old analog card?
Yes and yes.

Yes, it does. That's how I'll be using it--into Lyr+ for my desk.

Nice. Some clarification on swapping the OG Bifrost 2 card requiring previous firmware or working seamlessly without would be great. If it's possible to just swap between the two that'd be amazing.

I've emailed Dave about it (I'm at the Roundup right now), and will report back when I know more.

Will the Lyr+ fall into the same footprint as the BF2/64 and I'm assuming Lyr+ will move to the amp only section leaving Asgard 3 & Jot2 as the only modular amps right?
Bingo.

@Jason Stoddard any more surprises coming today or did I jump too early ordering the BF upgrade 2/64?
