Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Harbor Freight to the rescue? 😂😂
This kit now lists for over $1,000, not exactly Harbor Freight. I prefer other tools but this is not a bad set for occasional use. I was always of the philosophy that if you used say a socket set once a year or less, go with a cheap set. If you are a mechanic, using tools every day, then you buy quality. I use electronic tools three or four times a week and tend to keep a few Weller or Hako stations going with various size solder tips so I do not have to change tips as I work. :beerchug:

A slight change of subject for fans of the Bosch series, Bosch Legacy is now out with the same house and possibly the same audio setup is being used. Two episodes are available thus far.
So, does the house survive the earthquake?

Plus, despite all the doom, series 8 has just been approved.........

SchiitShow Writ Large
Or, Flushing the Last 2 Years

Well, maybe I'm not being entirely fair here, because this isn't just a SchiitShow. It is, more precisely, the Texas Audio Roundup, a Schiit and Emotiva (and friends) show, coming soon to a mini-California...er, I mean, Austin, near you!

(And yeah, I know, I'm ribbing the Austinites a bit, but it's good-natured ribbing. Remember when we could laugh about things? Yeah, like that. Relax.)

Why our own show? Why with Emotiva? Why not just go to one of the myriad of shows happening soon? Well, at least in part because (a) we're weird, and (b) we thought it might be time for something a little, er, different. A little more, ah, focused on the affordable side of things. A bit more, ahem, direct. Hence we got together with our friends at Emotiva and came up with this crazy thing. (Fun fact: my old marketing agency used to lease space from Dan Laufman before Emotiva was Emotiva...we go wayyyyyyy back.)

Of course it won't be all Schiit and Emotiva. In fact, there will also be customer systems, headphones from our friends, crazy homebrew speakers, and tons of other stuff. We're shooting for a fun, casual show where you can stroll and enjoy, without a ton of pressure.

Now, that's not to say it won't be exciting on the Schiit side. We're definitely bringing the big guns: Tyr, Loki Max, and Folkvangr for sure. Probably at least a couple of other new things too, but I can't talk about those yet. We'll see what makes it for the show...big, small, or in-between!

Texas Audio Roundup
July 22-23
Austin, Texas

Of course, I'll be there, as well as some other Schiitheads. Hopefully you can come and see us at the first-ever Texas Audio Roundup!

All the best,
Jason
Sounds like a good time, Jason! I'm sufficiently jealous
If I may be so bold, I recommend a visit to The County Line while you're in town. Especially the one by the lake.
Everything on the menu is great.

I'm guessing you've spent some time in Austin based on your avatar. The sign at El Arroyo has it's own instagram page. :)

I would not want to spoil anything for those who might want to watch the series.

As far as the audio equipment, it has not been shown much yet, the previous series ended two years ago and it may be tricky to lease said equipment again for the show.

McIntosh MX110 tuner/pre-amplifier, McIntosh MC240 power amplifier, Marantz 6300 turntable, and Ohm Walsh 4 speakers

So far the list consists of -

https://www.rythmikaudio.com/L12.html. Their direct servo tech really speaks to me. Plus, they're a TX company.
https://www.svsound.com/products/3000-micro-subwoofer. Can't talk about subs without mentioning SVS. Love the software integration.
https://us.kef.com/subwoofers/hi-fi-subwoofers/kc62-subwoofer.html As with the SVS l like the small form factor and software control.
REL subs are interesting
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/osd-audio-nero-tubebass-10-subwoofer-review Thanks for the link. For the price, I just may buy one (or 2?!) to see how I like it. Very cool. If you're amenable, I may shoot you a PM with a couple of questions.

Update on how CMX-2 interacted with my system:

It wasn't a magic bullet to go from "hum" to "zero-hum", but it definitely had an effect.

My left Tyr has a rough startup noise, almost a brief electronic "buzz/rattle" before it settles into its steady state 60Hz hum. That startup noise was eliminated by the CMX-2.

Steady state hum seems more or less the same on both Tyr after trying many different combinations of the CMX-2, my Furman PL8C and direct wall connections.

I thoroughly combed the house for any dimmers, PSU's or similar that could be inducing DC offset, but no smoking guns.

At this point, I can still hear the hum from my listening position when music isn't playing, so need to decide if its worth continued troubleshooting, or just ignore it.

Still on the fence about opening the cover to check inductor/transformer bolt tightness.

Do you live in a house or condo/apartment?
I am asking, because as far as I understand - in shared dwelling situations (condo / apartment), the smoking gun could be at your neighbor's unit...
Also, and I know it is a pricey solution (assuming it works) - did you try power regenerators, such as PS Audio's?

I believe they have a try-at-home-for-30-days policy, so you could always return if it does not resolve your issue...

some of their subwoofers clam 4000W RMS (not peak) power, but a standard 120V 15A outlet =1800W hmmmm...:thinking:
I could plug one in, until I use the circuit for a pottery kiln.🤪

Single family detached, underground power lines.

Actually, I wonder if there are electricians or even the power company with some kind of analyzer that could tell me about the power quality at my meter...hmm...

That power plant looks intriguing...my wallet may even allow one of those model 3's...not sure if my system would fall under the wattage limit though...the higher-watt models get spendy quick!

An interesting (to me) observation:
The same pair of tubes that is noisy* in Freya's gain stage is dead silent in Mjolnir.

Any theories as to why?

* white noise, considerably reduced after 48 hours of burn-in, but now remains at relatively low albeit constant and roughly equal level for both tubes, independent of volume knob position, potential RF interference ruled out as best I can

My experience with CMX-2 is that it just worked, both for a Hegel H360 amp and for a Holo May DAC. One additional test I'd suggest is to use the CMX-2 with just one and then the other of the Tyrs to check if there's a clear difference. If not, I'd start thinking of different causes, maybe something with the Tyrs themselves. OTOH, the behavior you reported for one of the Tyrs where the CMX-2 prevents a switch-on noise before settling into hum is compatible with the fact that DC offset can peak during switch-on surge. A couple of interesting links I found while trying to find more information:

I've had three Freya's. The latest Freya + is better at handling noisy tubes.
