I'm just grateful one does not have to remove the cover. :D

(Having the subsonic switch more easily accessible would have been nice, however)

In all fairness, the OG Mani had those switches on the bottom as well.
Facts and history lessons only serve to ruin jokes about current events.

So I returned to stereo during covid, I told myself, “You don’t need vinyl!” But the new Mani is making me think again! I can justify $150 for a preamp but how much for a decent turntable and cartridge? I have about 100 LPs from my wasted youth.

Depends on what you mean by decent. $200 is about the minimum for a Pro-Ject, Fluance, or U-Turn. Of course if you can justify $150 for a phono preamp, you're probably looking for more decent than those. There are lots of options above that price point, most of them are at least decent.

And vintage.
I am hoping you all argue a bit and help me decide. I bought a very high quality turntable in 1977, it cost $430, my room mate bought a VW for $500 at about the same time. That turntable still works, but I gave it to my hipster daughter ten years ago. I cannot take it back. I do not want a VW-priced turntable. But, again, I will learn if smart people debate.

I picked up a Project Debut Carbon Evo last year after a 30 year hiatus from vinyl. The Evo was $500 when I bought it (they are $600 now), but incomplete without a phono stage. I picked up a Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 for $200. So all in $700 for a nice turntable setup that I’m extremely happy with. So for a few hundred bucks more than the VW you could get a very nice setup.

I recently upgraded the stylus to a Moonstone for $180. I think I’m good on the TT front for a long time.

Other options I shopped before choosing the Evo were Fluance, U-Turn, Rega. IMO you probably can’t go wrong with any of those.

For those who will suggest vintage, I’m not against it, but I don’t have the time to hunt for bargains and I like having a warranty if something breaks prematurely.

You can get a very nice turntable (or three) for the $430 you paid in 1977 dollars.

By the way, there's a decent chance that VW your roommate purchased still works.

On the other hand, instead of that turntable, you could have bought a little Berkshire Hathaway stock...

I have a Pioneer PLX-1000, and a Michell Gyro SE.

Bring over a nice condition Karmann Ghia or 1st generation GTI, and you can have both!

Yes, vintage is definitely - what is available, what condition, what price and what if it needs maintenance. I will do that, some should not. A friend setup an Audio Technica Direct Drive with pre & USB built in using the USB out to a pair of Klipsch powered USB speakers. He and his wife are very happy with that. Spent $800. I agree with:
