Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

The relocation is going nicely. Finally have some room for a home office/mancave. Girlfriend was about to throw away her family’s old turntable rack, but I had a brainwave and decided to repurpose it.

No Schiit in the living room yet, but maybe in the future I’ll put together a kickass two channel system based on Schiit.

Elma guarding her new kingdom.

Congrats on the move! Elma seems to enjoy the beautiful nature you have there

I'll be in a very similar situation in 3 months, moving from an apartment to a pretty big house with more backyard garden I could have ever asked for!
So, finally no immediate neighbours and time to think about a serious 2-channel system...

Schiit N Music
Story / Saturday Night continued; eight (8) weeks later.
More of the same except:

Just as we are getting into the next order of things.
- Patio weather arriving.
- Garden and yard task.
- Us, family and friends vaccinated.
- Maybe an overnight visit/trip.
- Consulting job(s) starting up. One is an opportunity to work with an 80 MW solar farm project.

I started feeling bad, not covid bad, asthma, sinus and chest bad (my normal stuff). Getting a good breath progressively worsened. Normal meds and actions did not help.
Appointment with the Asthma Doctor went quickly from “your breathing is bad" to "your day is going to go down hill”.
Sent to a clinic for EKG. Told to go to Emergency Room directly (2 blocks by car) or they would call an ambulance. Spent next four (4) days in hospital.
I now have Persistent atrial fibrillation and some other stuff.
Three weeks of treatment, a follow up Cardiologist visit and now impending Cardioversion.
Life changes quick, Fun being “old and busted”.

Meanwhile my very cute (1 & 1/2 year old) granddaughter is magnificent. Still safe and sound in the UK.

Keeping up with this forum is a great pastime.
Have not felt like listening to much music or doing much of anything other than resting, watching TV/Youtube and helping with cooking & clean up.
Eating more "right" (even though we cook and eat mostly good anyway). Booze, caffeine, other pleasures stopped. This will moderate soon?

Schiit purchase list is modified. Now = Loki + and Vali 2+ on top with another Modi MB, Lyr 3 and the transport following along.
Making notes of music I should acquire, lots of ideas from here. Thank you.
Hoping most of the medical cost are covered

Jason you guys are kicking butt and taking names.

Enjoy the Schiit N Music
One of the most common causes of Atrial Fibrillation is Sleep Apnea. Cardiologists frequently forget about it. Your Cardioversion may not hold if you have Sleep Apnea that is not treated. I suggest a sleep study to add to your list of things to do. Good luck

Sorry to hear about your AF @r2muchstuff
I see that @Jason Stoddard has kindly replied directly to you about AF.
I was diagnosed with AF about 10 years ago.
In my case, cardioversion failed ( twice), but an old fashioned treatment 'Digoxin' has kept it under control.
This organisation- The AF Association- is UK based, but may provide some helpful information.
https://www.heartrhythmalliance.org/afa/uk
Many people, including some elite athletes, live with AF, so it can be manageable.
I wish you good luck and good health.

Hot damn this thread is long, great read though, very amusing....{{{snip}}}....Looking forward to try my first schiit....{{{snip}}}...
Welcome to this ridiculous hobby, @Qupie (hot damn, another user younger than me). Nice!

Q:
Hi!

Looking for a portable dac/amp. Will Schiit Hel work great with a big power bank?

A:
Yes as long as it puts out 5V 2A then it shouldn't be a problem at all!
Best,
Daniel

(Hel 1)

ipad 10w power supply should work okey
Looks like you are setting up a remote listening nook in the woods (off-grid)? Schiit's smaller kit seems to work well in such applications. Low or forgiving current and voltage requirements. Small footprint. My 2 cents...

Your just well seasoned is all, like so many others here. I say that as one of those unseasoned users full of P & V that spins wheels from time to time due to the inexperience, especially on electrical voodoo (really wish they made >5kA breakers from brands my coworkers trust, or the inhouse power people explained why I was limited to 5kA quicker, would have saved a few days of spinning wheels).

A 2A charger will be fine. Hel 2 peaks out at about 1.7A from the charger, so anything above that won't affect power output.

Edit: That's also why it doesn't work from a computer USB port. Good luck getting 1.7A out of that!

Edit to the edit: and the charger we ship is universal voltage, so if a plug adapter is available, it can be run on 220-240V just fine.
I'm assuming Schiit won't get involved with selling Chthulu-like power supplies that can be adjusted for different DC and AC power supplies. I wonder how off-grid power systems complicate silly HiFi lovers? ([PV panels] + [generator] + [wind turbine]) >>> (battery stn) >>> (DC/AC rectifier [converter]) >>> (home distribution panel) >>> (listening nook) >>> (120VAC to xxVAC or yyVDC) >>> (too many Schiit DACs and amps) >>> (rabid customer [me]).

Bad decision on my behalf: I can see myself snaking a thick wire from the battery station directly to my nook! 12-24 VDC battery bank?! Plug 'er all in. Flip the switch. Poof. Yeah, no.

Just add a current limiting resistor, right?

Possibly? I'll let a licensed sparkie (electrician) set it up. I'm a gentleman forester, farmer, and tweaker. I picked up and assembled my first Pi and am enjoying messing around with it (low amperage... LEGO-like assembly). It also pumps out pleasant ones-and-zeros to my Bifrost Multibit.

Yep, I agree with that, I'll help rig and handle the resistor bank or brake up on a crane but let the electricians and EEs actually wire it in and spec the bank (or put the exposed knife switch that arcs since it has live 250VDC running through it and needs a wooden fuse puller to break the sustained arc).

I have fun with mine - had a PiHole for a bit (found AdBlocker was easier), the OctoPi w/ camera is nice, and the Volumio Pi w/ USB SSD worked well when I had the Asgard over there, but waiting for the DAC to arrive for longer listening.

Before I was an instructor, I used to work in a food factory. That was my first opportunity to be around high voltage DC systems (big-ass, German-made, dough mixing machines). I still remember our on-duty electrician's reaction when I asked him whether DC was safer than AC.
Archimago's Musings is my go-to source for all things Pi-media-related.

I got diagnosed with sleep apnea. No heart disease so far (fingers crossed), but getting used to the CPAP machine is an ongoing struggle - and definitely not for those who are vain about how they look when they sleep!
