Not 8-track, but related.
Last week engineer Lou Ottens, the "father" of the Philips compact cassette passed away at the age of 94.
He made the cassette design that was a standard for over 20 years
Philips bought a licence from RCA to allow them to build the compact cassette. The smaller more compact Philips version eventually found its way into mass production.

... been complicated by higher than anticipated demand--dramatically higher--like I also said, we are building runs 9-10x higher than 2 years ago now to try to get ahead. There is no "planning" for this kind of surge, there is only reacting..
As much as the delays might suck for all involved, this is what I would call a "good problem" in the long run. Congratulations.

Quite an understatement to say that the compact cassette "eventually found its way into mass production"! It enabled the Sony Walkman which launched the entire category of personal audio, and became standard on car stereos. Before CDs entered the market, prerecorded cassettes had begun to outsell LPs.

I have a larger version that I received as a Christmas gift. Charged it up, threw it in the trunk, and last week my son's truck battery was totally dead. Not even a click. Someone (not him of course ) had left an interior light on. Hooked this thing up after 2.5 months since charging, and it fired up the truck like it had a new battery in it. I didn't expect it to even work, honestly. Jumper cables are now an endangered species...

I wish I could take my Modi Multibit with me for a walk.
Nothing saying you can’t, but you’re gonna look silly trailing that power cord...
