Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

You know what'd be cool? A Modius/Magnius sized tube hybrid. I know, I know, Vali and Lyr, but maybe more like a Valius? Something in between that isn't full tube, and isn't as pricey as Lyr. Valhalla 2 is there as full tube, but was thinking something with just one tube and hybrid like Vali.

I just really want a Valius. 😈

Loving my Modius/Jotunheim 2.

I just wanna tube amp to stack on top. I can't afford the Lyr atm. 👀

It isn't my fault, but I'd like to apologize to the non-U.S. viewers who took time out of their day to watch this. I could not be more embarrassed.

Don't worry, I only watch ice hockey world championship games when Finland is playing, especially if it's against Sweden. Occasionally I might watch actual football world championships, but I'm not fanatic.

As I live a little north of Detroit, I’m a big Red Wings fan. Half our team used to be from Norway or Sweden. And we used to play for the Stanley Cup almost every year. Sadly those days are long past. Oh well, that’s what YouTube is for, watching past championship games.

Virtual SchiitrMeet February 2021
Mike Gets Edumacational

So, Mike wants to make this more than an AMA thing this time, so he's picked a few things he'd like to go in-depth on. This doesn't mean you can't ask questions, but better to keep them on-theme. Here's what he's talking about:

Mike Talks Multibit and Sol
  • What is multibit digital conversion in audio?
    • How was it first developed and used?
    • How is it different from more traditional DAC technologies?
    • What makes it a good choice for hifi?
    • What is the role of digital filters in the DAC process? How much influence over the overall sound do filters make?
  • How do you approach designing an analog media such as SOL differently than a DAC?
    • What are some key takeaways from a design perspective after your experience launching the Sol turntable?
    • How do measurements fit into the overall process of designing either of these products? How is it different from Analog Vs Digital?
And yeah, I won't be available for heckling, because I'll be heading out to Corpus Christi. So if you want more Mike, live and unedited, please join us:

Via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Schiit/
Via YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZqCWt2_qqB-UD0-pcPpxCw

We hope to see you there!

Next month, maybe you get me...maybe from Corpus Christi!

All the best,
Jason

Wow, this is REALLY very interesting. A lecture on digital audio by someone why knows what he is talking about.

And Mike unedited is one of the funnier things you can listen to. We have enough politically correct commercial blabla from almost everywhere....

I won't listen to it live (being in Saudi Arabia, it would mean getting up at 3 am or so; not going to do that, sorry Mike), but afterwards.

I haven't watched a SB half-time in years.

You can add the dancers wearing what appear to be jockstraps on their faces to the list of reasons not to watch the super bowl.

Upon zooming the picture, they appear to be craniectomy dressings and white masks. Still, it is poor costuming

I was wondering when someone would mention that @macdonjh . We have a bigger one downstairs but the priority here is the music rig. Maybe when that one dies it will be time for an upgrade! Cheers

Music system is the priority for me too @StevePNW :relaxed:
My speakers are way bigger than my TV and I don't even own a flatscreen; just a 20 year old Sony Trinitron which must weigh 50Kg!
There is so much c**p on TV I prefer listening to music.

I think he is a talented performer and I like his "meta" message, that being said - it just doesn't translate well on a Super Bowl stage.

Keep it simple and play loud during halftime
Fairly somnambulate performance if you ask me. Bring some kick-ass for the SB.

Funny anecdote--the fabled 10-tube amp, Folkvangr, is done except for one small very non-ideal operational issue: it emits a rather significant DC thump on turn-off. Yes, even despite DC protection and 8 servos and fast-as-we-can-make-it shutdown. This is what happens when you have big power supplies collapsing as soon as you turn off the power switch. Ironically, this would be fairly easy to deal with if we could guarantee that everyone would use the power switch to turn it off, because we could use a dual-pole switch for instant shutdown. This is literally the first product where a front power switch would make a lot of sense...well, until the power glitches and the amp takes out your favorite headphones anyway. And then the front switch is moot.

So what do we do? Most likely this one will get some kind of analog computer/microprocessor approach with AC monitoring and staged shutdown to protect everything. Bottom line: nothing is ideal, nothing is perfect, expect the unexpected...and then some.

Solid state rectification, right? Have you tried tube rectification by any chance?

With all the complaints about the halftime show the main point of the Super Bowl was missed- KC got a thorough beat-down on the big stage. The game itself made this Broncos fan happy for an evening. :smile_cat:

Anyone knows this amp?
Is this marketing bladeebla?
I think they look awesomely compact and another question is this the future (Schiit) of amplification?

Never heard of the company but AGD Productions specs this as:
85watts at 8Ohm and 30A current capability with Gallium Nitride Mosfets!

It's a Class D hybrid design, so unlikely Schiit moves in that direction. Possibly manufactured for people who have more money than they know what to do with. Brutally and blingally pretty if you're into that look. And they probably sound pretty good. Orchard Audio makes GaN stuff for a lot less (small, but without the pretty tube thing).

The best comparison that comes to mind is a Pull Luxury Lever espresso machine. Although I think Pull went under with the pandemic, while AGD hasn't.

Thanks for the offer @JohnnyOps.
Much appreciated
I use LMS ( Logitech Media Software) with a plugin for Qobuz and an IOS app called iPeng to control it all, using an iPhone or iPad.
It gives me everything I need, as I can find what I want to listen to easily ( whether it is on Qobuz or my own ripped CDs) and most importantly, it sounds great.
Qobuz also provides biogs on most artists. If I want more I use the internet!
I won't even mention my digital source as I was shot down in flames by one forum member last year for having the temerity to suggest that such an old device was any good.
( It isn't a RPi)
Suffice to say, it preserves, and delivers, the precious bits, to my Yggy A2, via BNC S/PDIF, and sounds fantastic. :dt880smile:
@Les Strat I also use LMS it's free and works great, I'll have to try the Qobuz plugin. Thanks for posting.
