His coat was sparkly. Really sparkly.

I admit I had the wrong attitude going in, but the Super Bowl is a bust for me, I didn't enjoy the halftime show and I left early.

At least Delvon Lamarr knows what he's doing (my new CDs arrived today, Live at KEXP is currently playing), I still have some good scotch, and my son's Modi MB was also delivered. Here's his Schiit stack:

Small font because of the mini chassis...

Mike Gets Edumacational

So, Mike wants to make this more than an AMA thing this time, so he's picked a few things he'd like to go in-depth on. This doesn't mean you can't ask questions, but better to keep them on-theme. Here's what he's talking about:

Mike Talks Multibit and Sol
  • What is multibit digital conversion in audio?
    • How was it first developed and used?
    • How is it different from more traditional DAC technologies?
    • What makes it a good choice for hifi?
    • What is the role of digital filters in the DAC process? How much influence over the overall sound do filters make?
  • How do you approach designing an analog media such as SOL differently than a DAC?
    • What are some key takeaways from a design perspective after your experience launching the Sol turntable?
    • How do measurements fit into the overall process of designing either of these products? How is it different from Analog Vs Digital?
And yeah, I won't be available for heckling, because I'll be heading out to Corpus Christi. So if you want more Mike, live and unedited, please join us:

@Jason Stoddard

I'm going through the Interview you did with Audiophile

and am nodding along with the experience you had at Sumo. From the fun stress of production emergencies to fighting fires (unfortunately literal ones all too often, fire resistant hydraulics are just that - resistant). Also, I can't think of ANY company that is a single brand store that doesn't sell anyone else's stuff, especially in California...

@anyone

So I have access to a 200 MVA DC arc (~20 MVA AC arc if AC is easier than DC for this) and I know plasma arc speakers are fun desktop toys, but have ozone generation issues. This application thankfully comes with a couple million cubic meters per hour of ventilation so no issue there, would there be a semi simple way to overlay an audio signal to the arc without too much issue, ideally without obvious modification of course. DC has rectifier and reactor plus a step down transformer (unless the reactor/rectifier is doing it), AC is transformer and on-load tap changer.

Re: Super Bowl - last few I haven't bothered to watch, caught a recording/rip after the fact of the half time show and typically viewed as nothing that needed to be seen. This one is another one for that list.

Re: Mike's targeted AMA - I missed asking questions about some of the mechanical product design in previous AMAs so this gives a good reason to ask them now.

"Resistant." Unfortunately, many people read this as "Proof." These are very different things, with "Proof" usually being impossible. Non-engineers won't get it. But many non-engineers also think that products come from magical places where happy elves cobble miraculous stuff out of the ether, to be placed into shipping containers in infinite quantities. If only it was so simple.

Funny anecdote--the fabled 10-tube amp, Folkvangr, is done except for one small very non-ideal operational issue: it emits a rather significant DC thump on turn-off. Yes, even despite DC protection and 8 servos and fast-as-we-can-make-it shutdown. This is what happens when you have big power supplies collapsing as soon as you turn off the power switch. Ironically, this would be fairly easy to deal with if we could guarantee that everyone would use the power switch to turn it off, because we could use a dual-pole switch for instant shutdown. This is literally the first product where a front power switch would make a lot of sense...well, until the power glitches and the amp takes out your favorite headphones anyway. And then the front switch is moot.

So what do we do? Most likely this one will get some kind of analog computer/microprocessor approach with AC monitoring and staged shutdown to protect everything. Bottom line: nothing is ideal, nothing is perfect, expect the unexpected...and then some.

You can add the dancers wearing what appear to be jockstraps on their faces to the list of reasons not to watch the super bowl.

It isn't my fault, but I'd like to apologize to the non-U.S. viewers who took time out of their day to watch this. I could not be more embarrassed.

I think he is a talented performer and I like his "meta" message, that being said - it just doesn't translate well on a Super Bowl stage.

Keep it simple and play loud during halftime
