Ooof, c'mon now, I think that's a bit uncouth.

Let's have some respect for departed brothers in arms. We needn't be vultures.

Edit - it is possible I took the comment the wrong way, this being the internet and all. As usual it's not what was said, but how it was said (and how it was perceived).

no disrespect intended to the late ORT. likely his relatives don't appreciate the hobby of audio reproduction as most of us on this thread do.

ORT's comments about VU meters made me smile.
I have VU meters on my old Logitech Transporter, which are really just a novelty, but I never switch them off.

You're confusing NEEDED with WANTED. :D

The only time a VU meter is required for home audio is for recording analog signals.
Yep...remember having them on my RtoR and cassette decks; very useful.

That said, I still fondly remember the VU meters on my early amps Phase Linear, Marantz, G.A.S

Ooooohhhhh...pretty lights

Don't understand why anyone would want or need a visible mark on a volume knob. Isn't that what your ears are for? Is anyone going to say, My ears are beginning to hurt but the volume knob's only at 10:47 so it can't be too loud? Possibly the same folk who say, well, the distortion figures are first rate therefore the sound must be perfect.

Maybe if there are teenagers who blast the system, but if you simply develop the habit of zeroing the knob before beginning the startup ritual, trouble will be avoided.

OTOH, I totally get the appeal of VU meters. Wonder how many here would welcome a color-coded led display for volume yet decry VU meters. People are funny.

Yes and no. I use the visible mark to see whether a recording has low or high dynamics. So maybe next time I don't cranck it up too far to fast on a heavy compressed recording. For the rest you are right of course.
I prefer to have the correct sound level right from the start, so I don't have to correct it during playback.

On the Freya+, the knob value is good to be able to see when switching between buffer and active gain modes. If you were doing some loud listening in buffer mode, switching to active gain mode could be very surprising if you happen to forget resetting the knob. A highly visible mark on the knob is helpful, as the gain modes can be switched via remote.
