Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

For me, opera and classical music are only enjoyable as live experiences. Recordings, not so much. YMMV.

-edit - maybe after my big PowerBall win on Saturday I can purchase a full MBL Extreme system (and a house with a large enough room to properly use it) and then recordings might "sound" live...

What do people like about a near field setup for their audio as opposed to a headphone rig?
...
Two things: my head gets too hot with headphones and I'm moving around constantly and wired headphones are annoying with the cable entanglement.
Wireless headphones help with the latter but not the former.

So, the near field setup is much more physically comfortable to me, not to mention hearing everything with the whole body as (iirc) @JanMc mentioned.

Counterpoint: no one ever yells at me to "turn it down" or "turn it off" with the headphones..... maybe I like it too loud?
My father never seemed to be much of a Carly Simon fan, but he did pick up a copy of “Playing Possum” much to my mother’s annoanyce.
A brief googling and geez she has a bunch of "racy" covers. Tame by today's standard. Never noticed before as my wife is really the Simon fan....
That sounds pretty disgusting, does that mean they're sort of sweet to boot? I've always hated sweet pickles! 🤮
...
No cornichons for you? Delicious, in moderation.
...I haven't done that listening to opera before but I bet it puts a welcome visual spin on the proceedings. ...
Opera has always been an interesting listening endeavor for me. I need the visual of the production ....
I can't really listen to opera without the costuming and scenery. I am sort of learning how to, maybe, it's just all the vocal gymnastics are wearing.

One of our local beer halls closed so we tried this one a bit further away. The beer list was two-sided legal pad size in a small type -- maybe 100 beers total?

I had the Spaten Oktoberfest 🤤

Curiosity got the best of me and I pointed Yo-Yo Ma's Shosty Cello Concerto No 1 towards my streamer and let it rip. The problem is that it never really ripped. I think the issue isn't really Ma's playing, but rather the overall reading itself. Andris Nelsons just makes the entire performance thick and plodding - it lacks all of the lithe agility and abrupt violence that I expect from the piece. Ma in turn is too ponderous as well, though his playing is fine - this works better in the gorgeously tearful second movement, though it, too, could be sped up a bit. I know other people like him but Nelsens hasn't really been my cup of Shostakovich tea so this could just be my own personal taste rearing up. As in all things, YMMV. 😬

I will say, the Boston Symphony sounds awesome and this is a gorgeous recording - rarely do I hear those lower-octave instruments growl and groan with such heft!

Follow up with Shosty's Second Cello Concerto with Yo-Yo Ma and Andris Nelsons... Nelsens' used-motor-oil-syrup pace is more appropriate here, though I still find myself wanting to hit the proverbial >>> button to speed it up a little bit. 🤪

But that bass drum in the opening movement... Wowza! T'was a surprise when that hit. Did the recording engineer climb inside of the thing for the recording? More of that please! 😁

At the end of the day, there are many other recordings of these two amazing concertos I'll hit play on first. Try Alisa Weilerstein's recording of both - that one will show you how these pieces ought to be played!

Or get this zany Record Store Day release with a fun picture disc 'roentgenizdat' or 'bone music' representation of the infamous story of Rostropovich's recording of the premiere of Shostakovich's Second Cello Concerto being smuggled out of the USSR by a resourceful Soviet archivist who hid the tape in a mislabeled box after Rostropovich himself had been exiled from the country. 'Bone music' recordings were a way for Soviets to enjoy bootleg recordings from the West, often cut onto discarded X-ray film material.

Complete Set of the string quartets
Pacifica Quartet, “The Soviet Experience"
Cedille Box 1003 2014 Marvelous recordings!
As it turns out, I'd already playlisted this album in Qobuz. Haven't listened yet, but it was recommended somewhere recently - probably a David Hurwitz video. 😜

I recently told him I thought his videos were recently a bit too harsh on Yo-Yo. He reviewed a boxed set of his too.

I love Yo-Yo Ma. Sure, his Shost. Cello Concertos leave something to be desired. But noone is excellent in every area of the repertoire. It's just not possible. But in general, Yo-Yo hits it out of the ball park. Most of his recordings are excellent.

Nice to see Cardinal Black, WRM, and Elles being listened to worldwide, and not just here in the UK.
The When Rivers Meet album finished at #4 on the uk album chart, which is fantastic for a fully independent artist. 👍

A big Powerball win here would get Jason a (mostly) free employee.
Everything else I want I pretty much already have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
