Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

5 bands for G2 and Byggy, but also clamped to their respective frequency ranges.

Peak / dip.
Well, actually if the bands are spaced about 2-2.25 octaves apart it turns out to be pretty useful for my speakers. But hunting planar headphone CSD's not happening.

Recalling the (no doubt apocryphal) tale of the incorrigible abusive drunk who had two sons. One grew up to be an abusive drunk, the other a teetotaler. When asked why they turned out that way, both answered, "With a father like mine, what did you expect?" Showing once again how we all learn different lessons from our lives.

Back in college, I used occasional hang-onto-the-floor-so-you-don't-fall-off binge as a mental/emotional reset. These days a glass of wine is usually sufficient.

Be wise and be well, everybody.

And keep posting music for me to enjoy, thanks.

My father and my maternal grandfather were both severe alcoholics with my father being the worse of those two. I had other relatives that were also really bad as far as alcohol was concerned. One brother drank (and I witnessed this) 48 bottles of Michelob and wound up talking to an apartment door with the same number as his favorite hockey player.

He got quite loud and it was very late and I know he was scaring the folks in the apartment so I asked him to be quiet and come with me so that I could take him home. He was stupid drunk and hit me, which was quite honestly like a flea hitting a Cane Corso. He turned back toward the door and I spun him around stupid, lifted him off the floor and over my shoulder and took him to the car and put him gently inside for the trip home. I put him to bed and watched him a few hours to ensure he was okay. He didn’t really remember anything of the incident.

Because of my experiences with relatives and friends that drank themselves to beyond dumb, I never drank alcohol. I have no problem with adults that do. I do like music tho’…:beerchug:

ORT
I've had basically the same experience with my brother but it was always drugs (ludes and valium and coke) for him. Carried him to bed more than once and pretty much turned me off of drugs. I do drink alcohol though but always in moderation, which my father taught me.

Finnegan is right here with me as I buff the outside of a turntable platter. I just set it to 78 rpm’s and let the table do the work.🤪

What will the 5 pEQ ranges be on Gumby?
Don't know yet.

Will we have ability to have, say 3 of them in the 200Hz and below realm, perchance? Or perhaps fewer range restrictions (possibly due to more computes being available on the DSP than on the Unison CPU?).
Same general behavior as Mimir, just 5 instead of 3 bands.

When you say “set Kara volume to 100% do you literally mean cranked to the clockwise max? Or do you mean the max normal volume I’d listen to were no Mimir be in the chain?
Well, if you want to know what Mimir is like when used as a preamp, you'll have to somehow bypass your Kara.
Most sensible approach is probably to raise Kara's volume while you lower Mimir's.
Again: That's not meant to be a "solution" just a way for you to get to hear what the loudness compensation actually sounds like in the environment it's designed to be used in: With Mimir as the preamp.

Well, actually if the bands are spaced about 2-2.25 octaves apart it turns out to be pretty useful for my speakers. But hunting planar headphone CSD's not happening.
If you want total, super fine-grained control, the pEQ in our DACs isn't what you're looking for. And it's not intended to be. It's intended to offer an easy to use, simple to understand, mind-blowingly affordable (as in: free!) way for people to have a bit more control over their tunes than they would otherwise have.

Like many here, the drinking age when i 'grew up' was 18, we had paper licenses which were easy to alter and package store owners had no disincentive to not sell to minors. Started drinking around 16, typically 4 to 8 of us in a car, each with their own 8-pack of ponies (7 oz) and a half-pint (Southern Comfort was my usual choice), 3 to 5 days a week. So we were trained to drink to get f@-ed up and i had a hard-time out growing that, never learning to drink responsibly

I never drank at home but when out I always drank a lot, and could never have just one or three. I was that guy that would fall asleep at the bar and you never want to be that guy. A typical Tuesday night Setback league (banquet tomorrow for the 43rd year I have been running a setback league) would be 8 to 10 Becks Lights and 8 to 10 shots of 1800 and no problems going to work the next day. (Well, 3 times over the years i did drive all the way to work and then turn around and go back home). Many close encounters with trouble and who knows what else. I got remarried in 2004 (21 year anniversary this coming Wednesday) and really slowed down then but did manage to get my one and only DUI.

I stopped drinking (except for the occasional dinner wine) for about 15 years. At first my friends were put off but soon realized that they had a DD and all was good. The only time I feel out of place is when 60 people are singing some song at the top of their lungs at the Polish club. When COVID hit I was responsible for the data where I work and was working 60 to 90 hours a week. My boss sent me beer and cigars thru the mail (which we found out after is illegal) and since then I have 'one' drink a day. I always get a 4 pack of IPA, a stout (current stout is 14.5% ABV!) and a bottle of Scotch. I get 5 pours out of the scotch. I never drink out except for wine with the missus.

Everyone respects that I won't have a drink (maybe 3 times a year at the club such as Super Bowl Sunday where I run a 100 person pool and gathering and know I wont be driving for at least 5 hours). I do miss it in many ways and at the same time I don't miss it at all. I have lost several close friends where long term alcohol abuse shortened their lives and I could have very easily continued down that road, and possibly killed someone, or gotten subsequent DUIs or who knows what,

Tonight will be a Highland Park pour during the Celtics game 1.

Very early, initial impression/comparison between Folkvangr and Valhalla 3, screenshots listed of what I used:

This should be a hit. I'm not sure I'd do great in a blind test picking them apart (which is good, that's not really how I compare things, usually a few days on one thing before I rotate and just see how I feel), but figured I would do a little A/B before VH3 goes to the bedside stack.

They have the same sonic signature. If anything I notice a little less precision/ definition on some string plucking and percussion. This is a little more noticeable on high gain. I suspect rolling out the stock tubes may change this further.

I may be an odd duck, in that I almost exclusively use low gain. I did not play with the multiplier as I largely left planars years ago. Similarly, bass and electric guitar felt different on the Fv in a favorable way, though I wouldn't rule out stock tubes there as well. Sub-bass felt more right on Fv but almost impossible to pinpoint in what way. Could be due to smaller footprint but VH3 was putting off noticeably more heat than Fv.

Note, for those needing the details: Source is Pi2AES Mercury V2 streaming local FLAC on ROON Rock to Gungnir 2 via AES, then JPS Labs Superconductor V RCA to Folkvangr and Wireworld Micro-Eclipse AES to RCA in on VH3. Headphones were ZMF Atrium Closed in Black Limba via their Verite Silver cable. Stock tubes in the Valhalla 3, 1978 Voshkod Rocket Single Wire 6N23P in the Folkvangr.

Moral of the story: If you get VH3, you probably don't need Fv (but good luck prying mine away from me, ever). It's that good.

Recommend some taller feet or spacers on the tube HP amp, maybe 3/4” 20mm or so for cooler running.

VH3 vs VH2: biggest thing is the impedance multiplier to drive low-z planars (e.g. DCA Aeon, Ether) or low-efficiency (e.g. Tungsten) which need a lot more current than hi-z & hi-efficiency dynamics (e.g. hd650)

If seeking a voicing / tonal change, consider tube rolling or trying Mimir with existing Valhalla 2 & HD650 first
Honestly I would say you should give the two more space than that as the Valhalla 3 gets hotter than my Mjolnir 3 (which I have mentioned before I accidentally burned myself on it).

I have yet to try the impedance multiplier, but with my Atrium Open 300 ohm load it is performing beautifully (more listening time needed of course :smirk:)

Mimir is a surprise to me, as it pairs incredibly well with the Valhalla 3, and it comes closer to the Yggdrasil+ MIB than I expected. I understand why @ArmchairPhilosopher has that combo as his work chain. :L3000:
