Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Is Singular theoretically possible in an OG Gungnir? Or do size/space/other constraints prevent it?

No further new upgrades will be made available for OG Gungnir (I asked earlier this year) because of chassis constraints and the new board designs. The model is now frozen.

Yep, can be swapped back and forth!
Hmm, so this begs the question, could I upgrade the digital input boards but keep my OG boards in place (essentially opting out of Singular)? Considering this doesn’t seem to be a current option, I’m guessing no or maybe.

Hey all,

A couple of quick updates:

1. Valhalla 3 is looking good for a May Day (May 1) launch. I'll have a chapter up when this happens, or an excuse if Jason's Law strikes.

2. The "Byggy List" is live. This is AKA the Yggdrasil Owners' Priority Upgrade Program. If you're interested, give us a $15 deposit, let us know what you want, and you'll get first shot at a full Byggy or Singular™ upgrades. This is under Upgrades, at https://www.schiit.com/products/yggy-to-byggy

If you're on the spam list, you'll also get an email re the Priority Upgrade Program today.

That's it. Lots of stuff to get done, more to announce later this year!

All the best,
Jason
@Jason Stoddard general curiosity, why has Schiit stayed away from providing an ethernet interface, allowing their DACs to connect directly to a local network without the need of requiring another device to sit between it and the network? Also, with more and more DACs & Streamers offering I2S connections, was this ever a consideration? I understand I2S isn't uniform, but I see other manufacturers are now offering option to configure the I2S pin inputs to allow flexibility with streamers offering I2S.

So, the current MB upgrade is it (and I wonder how long the present stock will last)...? Or, leave it D/S...! Thanks. 🤓

They have stated that they will never get into any form of streaming, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. 😉

The only reason I can see to have an ethernet connection would be for streaming, and Jason/Martin have been emphatic until they're hoarse that a streamer ain't gonna happen. Ever.

Jason if all I’ve purchased on my used Yggdrasil from Schiit are LIM cards that were sent to me without my sending the Yggdrasil in, can I get on the list? Just trying to divine what “have purchased a significant upgrade through us” might mean. I won’t be offended if the answer is “no,” completely fine with what I got and seeing how things play out, too. Thanks!

Or an Yggdrasil GS2 and Singular card, or a Modi Multibit and Byggy, or nothing, sit back and wait a while...we're not salesy.

Caveat: Singular is not going to be inexpensive, no matter where it shows up. Relax, there's no $400 "Singlius" coming.
With Byggy at $3,500 we are getting into serious money even if we can argue it's good value when compared with the competition.

How much of the price tag comes from a more complex design and how much is accounting with higher parts and cost of doing business (i.e. inflation) in say the last 5 years?

Have you forgotten where you are posting? There is no best -- only preferences.

** BTW - I prefer the best tasting Coca Cola and it is from Mexico. ;)

EDIT: I received the below email this AM and thought I would pass this along for those tube-o-holics. This is especially good news if you are looking for one of the biggest values and highly regarded noval tube -- the Brimar CV-455 (Footscray). I've bought many a tubes from Langrex and have never been disappointed.

Thank you for this heads up. Very good prices on Mullard 6sn7gt that are available in matched pairs. Confirmed with James at Langrex that they are 50's/60's. You just can't get them that cheap anywhere. Also grabbed a pretty holy grail 1957 RCA red base 5692 that only showed 1 in inventory and obscenely under market value.

Per “DAC card only” option (cheapest at $1K) it looks like the old DSP board can still run a singular Sigularity card with ROM update, but “full update” will replace it with a more powerful one. Does this mean “some” digital goodies (EQ, loudness, etc) are not available if going this route? Any implication to sonic quality - guess/hope not, if I just want to use it as pure DAC and don’t care about digital preamp / EQ / etc?

MB and Unison USB, the latter of which I got a couple of months ago, and apparently there are plenty of those boards. And dang it, the total cost for me to get that upgrade is exactly the cost of a Mimir!

To throw another curve ball into what I suspect might produce a “we don’t know yet” answer, will there eventually be an option to send in for a Byggy upgrade if we already have purchased and installed the Singular card on its own, and will that knock down the upgrade pricing some?
