Thanks! Do you know where I can get some spade -> BFA speaker wires? Linn's are annoying that way.
Check out Transparentcable.com.

One of my favorite Tull songs is Man of God, previously unreleased, maybe on the Stormwatch album? Steve Wilson remix.

Yes, released 2020 or so (maybe?).

Well, I am both a classically trained pianist AND a jazz pianist. I spent decades as a concert pianist. And I think it's highly unforgiving to just hop on an alien instrument and just be expected to perform your best.

Piano is one of the only instruments where you can't perform on the instrument you own. Almost every other musician can bring their own instrument to perform on. For a pianist to go to a venue and just perform is kind of insane. And even if they spend two or three days on that instrument to get used to it, they then have to start all over again on a different piano in a different town.

Then you have to factor in that most venues do not take care of their instruments in a proper way. I don't just mean tuning. I mean keeping the hammer action in tact and sorting out inconsistencies of tone across the frequency range. Pianos need constant maintenance before, during and after performances. Each piano is unique and has it's own problems. Even the Barbican in London has an absolutely terrible piano. I remember vividly despising that instrument....

That was my life for 23 years. It was always a very difficult situation. Jazz piano is equally difficult. I think there is a massive misconception that jazz pianists or jazz musicians don't want the same level of control and precision that classical musicians seek.

So respectfully, I completely disagree.

How big of a pile?

Get a close out valhalla or Valhalla 3.
Not astronomically large, just 50 tubes. I definitely have the Valhalla 3 on my want list.

Could be, I just found it on vinyl and the 40th anniversary edition had that song I believe.

I will definitely get my son a Dire Straits LP, oh and he plays trumpet so that in a jazz trio or quartet perhaps.🤪

Maybe Tom Waits Nighthawks at the Diner

Lou Reed maybe

I did something similar with some craigslist finds locally. An older electronics/tv repairman sold off his hoard as he downsized homes. I think I have over 5000 tubes. I'm not even sure what is in the boxes yet.

Anybody ever make a silly purchase thinking it wouldn't pan out and wind up sitting on a bunch of something you're not sure what to do with? Just me?... Probably not.

So any way, I tossed a (laughably small) bid at a sizeable pile of allegedly NOS 6n1p's on the bay and wound up winning for better or worse. They "all tested good" but I have no documentation as to results. Suggestions on what I should do now? Buy a tube tester? Toss them into my Freya N and stop once the smoke comes out? Rig up the world's most dangerous Christmas light display? Party favors for my next barbecue?

Any and all advice/suggestions are welcome.
If you got these on Ebay from a certain seller in the Ukraine that has a number of auction listings for big quantities of 6N1P's, I'd very highly recommend you get them tested before putting them in your Freya. PM me if you'd like to discuss further.

It amazes me how many tubes are offered by sellers saying they are tested, and then offering no evidence and people seemingly accepting them. If you have the means to test -great, otherwise stick with the few reliable providers. Deals to good to be true in NOS tubes are too good to be true.

My favorite Tull song is Locomotive Breath. Maybe because it makes me think of you? Hmmm.

Hmm but then again there are plenty of classical pianists that are uninteresting to listen to and miss the point of the music.
I have to confess that as a longtime jazz fan, I've enjoyed some KJ recordings, but I can name from memory quite a few jazz pianists who hold my interest a lot more. In no special order: Bill Evans, Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Sylvie Courvoisier, Aki Takase, David Virelles, Aruan Ortiz, ... There's something in KJ that sounds to me artificial, and spreads to his classical performances. If I want to listen to Bach or Mozart, I'll start with András Schiff (heard him in London last year, wonderful mostly Mozart program with delightful and enlightening commentary between works), but of course there are so many others to listen to, such as Víkingur Ólafsson, whose complete Goldberg Variations in SF recently grabbed you and did not let go.

Many people here, and your son too, might dig jazz trumpeter Jaimie Branch (who sadly passed away at a young age in 2022). Amazing blowing, and a passionate singer, too. Her music has a kind of roots street vibe to it. She always had splendid musicians playing with her and the recordings by International Anthem are always good. My strongest rec is her live album Fly Or Die Live but her posthumous Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die ((world war)) is also stunning. [Being the third of her studio Fly Or Die albums, that title makes more sense. 😜]
