Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Never mess with the guys who have no sacred cows.  Especially when you consider yourselves above reproach.

Wow.

Sacred cows make the best hamburgers.

My Comment
Is this a joke? Obsolete? Your social media guy should learn how to google the chip before making inflammatory claims

Stereophile's Reply
We don't have a "social media guy" - I, John Atkinson, post to Facebook that which I think interesting and relevant. The datasheet for the DAC chip clearly states that it is a 20-bit part and my measurements in the review clearly reveal the truncation of 24-bit data.

My Response
Being a 20 bit chip doesn't make it "obsolete". Maybe the issue here is what you think the word obsolete means.

Notice that he sidesteps the obsolescence claim and focuses on the actual bit depth of the Yggy.  It's like he realizes he has put his foot in his mouth.

Actually, it doesn't truncate, it rounds. Two totally different things.

Though I suppose I should thank him for handing me the theme for a series of ads, thanks to input from Mike and you guys...totally forgot the made in USA and affordable angles.

Thank you for the technical clarification.  It perfectly complements what I said to him.  This is the last bit I'll post from Facebook, promise.

Stereophile:
Scott Criswell "obsolete" in terms of 24-bit audio. If you wish to use this part, you need to dither the 24-bit words to 20 bits, not truncate as Schiit has done This is basic digital audio engineering. Yes, you might prefer the sound of truncation, but it is still sub-optimal engineering, in my opinion

Me:
I have a somewhat hard time believing that the guy who invented the first stand alone DAC is making mistakes in "basic digital audio engineering". Again, I think you are using a different definition of obsolete than the rest of society, since the chip is produced, used, and up to date.

At least he finally added an IMO.

Sounds like JA didn't know it was a non-audio DAC.

I find that weird (on his part).

You'd think a guy who knows all typical DAC chips would run across that one he hasn't seen before and try to determine what it is.  Or at least read the Schiit materials on it.

The rounding is done in the DSP, actually.

Obsolete – Wow. Stereophile was once a great publication which dared to fly in the face of the corporate mags which gave equal, glowing reviews to everything they ever heard. Reading their own facebook feed shows the pile-on of comments overwhelmingly opposed to their labeling us(me) as such. My first reaction was don't they remember the days when Dick Olsher was writing about my early work with CD players before DACs as a component were a gleam in anyone's eye? Don't they remember my first DAC as a component ever? Don't they know who I am? God damn, that just lowers me to their level of arrogance. They gut-shot themselves, which trust me is much more painful than shooting themselves in the foot. I find it sad. My feelings are is it is somewhere between watching an aunt you once loved and admired slowly having her universe shrink with dementia, and watching a starving baby die of diarrhea.

So it is now time to not let their action neither piss us off nor hurt us in the least. Time to cease any debate of their reported "facts", for to do so validates improperly researched reporting.  Time to back off and for me to celebrate the many, many good years I passed with them.  Whatever they do, let them do it to themselves.

True class in response to what smacks of true ignorance.  Hats off to you, Mike.

Here is what is obsolete:

A  ONE HUDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND dollar ($120,000) 4 box digital stack with maybe 5 grand of parts, and about 40 grand worth of aluminum case work.

This DEFINES obsolete.

"When you write audio reviews, it's never easy to remove great equipment from your system, but the feeling is diminished by the realization that a product of equal excellence will eventually replace it. I don't have that feeling with the Vivaldi 2.0. It's not just the best digital source I’ve heard; it’s in league with the two or three best audio products I’ve ever reviewed. Packing up the Vivaldi 2.0 hurt."

Does somebody have a some Advil for the reviewer? Or does someone want to rub his boo boo?

Like customer service.   That's seriously obsolete, and embraced by Schiit.

Jason is right - it just striked me that pretty much everything Schiit does is "obsolete" by modern standards. Then why does it feel so refreshing? Maybe something is wrong with said standards?

EDIT: hell, just look at those prices.. like they took them straight from the 70s and forgot to adjust for inflation... seriously OBSOLETE.
