Schiit Audio Gungnir 2

This is for everybody who hates 'marching music' and for those that do. I had the loan of this record for a time back in the 70s and loved it. This will also appeal to fans of PDQ Bach and also residents of Boerne, TX.

Enjoy:

Have had my Gungnir 2 in for 3 days and my initial impressions are in. I find Yggdrasil A1 and MIB have more bass presence and quantity, while the Gungnir 2 presents a bit leaner and maybe even a bit poofy in the bass (Bass is not a tight single hit, but rather like a whiff, personally not a fan.) I find MIB to be the best DAC overall for myself and my system. While Gungnir 2 has similar resolving ability in the treble and a blackground akin to the MIB, it's just light-bodied and a bit prickly in the treble. I also find the imaging/depth/staging a bit "restricted" feeling in comparison to the Yggdrasil variants. It's as if elements in a song are locked in a horizontal grid such as | | | | | instead of being smoothly blended throughout the stage. It also does't have the holographic front-to-back layering/depth of Yggdrasil. Just sounds a bit flat.

Unfortunately, my unit seems to have a grounding issue, which also seems to be par for the course with Schiit gear at this point. I don't think I've bought a new piece of Schiit gear without some kind of problem in the last few years.

It's quite cold and dry here in NJ and with the heat running there's always gonna be some static. I've brushed my hand across the Gungnir 2 a couple times which resulted in the whole DAC dying, lights shutting off and emitting no sound. Power cycling fixes it, but I've never had an issue like this with any other Schiit DAC or components from any other company. Now I've had my fair share of problems with Schiit gear, but nothing this intrusive. I hope this is resolved with a refund quickly.

In any case: I much prefer MIB in my headphone system (and even A1 as a flavor DAC) over the Gungnir 2, issues with my unit aside.

By experience with several new R2R DACs - give them about 2 weeks or 100-150 hours before they bloom.

I don't think @Nick76 has either DACs though. He has moved to the Hugo TT2 based on his sig

Yeah, I've unfortunately had a tough recent history over the last 2 years with Schiit products arriving broken and will no longer be purchasing anything from the company, despite Yggy MIB still being my favorite DAC that I've heard/owned. Gungnir 2 got returned after the static death incident (after they tried to shift the blame on my house's wiring, then telling me it's normal, and finally being expected to pay return shipping and a restocking fee on a defective item). Tough to get 100-150 hours on a DAC that kills itself every time the chassis is lightly brushed.

Well, you clearly have a wiring issue if that’s what you’re experiencing…

Not quite the case at all.... Hasn't happened to any other gear I've owned, even the Yggdrasil it's sitting on top of, plugged into the same power conditioner. The Gungnir 2 obviously had a grounding issue internally or was not properly ESD tested during it's production. I've been in this hobby long enough to know when a piece of gear is defective. Also, the Schiit customer support agent even mentioned that his Kara does the same thing, which is not encouraging.

Weird, never heard of something like that? Your region has dry air or what?

I've seen more than one Kara owner mention the issue as well. I've never experienced it on my Freya S though.

I had a similar issue with BF2 in my old rental property, it was surrounded by modems and routers and full size computer as well and hated a particular outlet. In my current house never had an issue with it.

This unfortunately was a problem with the unit. Using any outlet, with nothing around it, with nothing else but power connected to it, it would shut off and require a power cycle to even respond to anything. I've had about 5 or 6 individual Bifrost 2s and 2/64s, a Modius or two, a Modi, and then the Yggdrasil, along with plenty of other brand's DACs. Never had the issue with any of them on the same outlet. Stuff arrives broken sometimes, it happens. Unfortunately a disproportionate amount of that broken stuff has been Schiit products for me and I've moved on.

Found a shelf for my desktop stack. The Gungnir 2 looks great.

I recently picked up a Lyr 3 for my desk, and if I move around a lot in my chair while wearing IEMs I get a constant static shock through my ear canals (I don’t remember this happening with my Vali 2, but haven’t used it with IEMs in awhile). While moving some things around, I had my IEMs plugged into the DNA Starlett on my desk, no static.

Not trying to point fingers or pile on, but just to point out that different electronics clearly behave differently on the same wiring due to different designs (I just hope the static never kills the Lyr, since I'm enjoying it considerably!). Blaming wiring seems…odd.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant this happened with every piece of Schiit gear you bought in the last 2 years.
