Schiit Audio Gungnir 2

You'd be looking at BNC to RCA cable instead since BNC is NOT balanced unlike AES/EBU

With an existing BNC cable, one could also use a BNC-female-to-RCA-male like this one from Canare. The BNC connector is better and more robust anyway, so I’d probably prefer that over a cable that went BNC to RCA.

Note that I’ve tried one of these with a Blue Jeans Belden 1694A BNC cable and preferred the sound when I removed the adapter and just used my Blue Jeans Belden 1694A with Canare RCA connectors.

Oooh nice! Yeah then I can just use my existing BNC cable. Will see - the player is pretty close to the DAC and I have several coax cables (signal cable, blue jeans, audio quest). But you mean that you prefer both ends of the BNC cable with the RCA adapters?

I’m saying in my system that I preferred (1) using a Belden 1694A cable with RCA connectors between my source’s RCA output and DAC RCA input over (2) using a Belden 1694A cable with BNC connectors between my source’s RCA output —> RCA-to-BNC adapter —> DAC BNC input.

I never tried an RCA-to-BNC cable.

Gotcha. Yeah, It seems unnecessarily complicated. The only reason I use BNC now (Cardas cable) is that it just so happened that the Allo streamer and the Gumby both had that interface. So it was something interesting to try. Anyway, digital transport method is the least of my concerns - was just curious. thanks!

I've seen it. I critiqued it already. She's like more bass more bass.... Just want to hear from someone who is as big a fan of the Gumby A1 as I am for a good long time.

BTW, your review which I was 2nd or 3rd to like is very good.

Yeah I saw this video before I came on here to see what you all thought. I did miss his outright strong recommendation. If it's that good, I'm in; I just had to decide what else $1600 could get me; spent 2 days looking at headphones (ex. Arya Organic, LCD2C, etc) and decided there was nothing out there in that price point w/o some compromises (sound-wise, physically). The only oddity with the Gungnir 2 is that they switched from an AES / EBU BNC connector to an XLR connector. My source streamer has the BNC connector, so I guess I guess just buy a BNC -> digitil XLR cable? (I use AES / EBU BNC currently b/c Gumby).

Actually, if you want to properly convert a AES/EBU XLR digital input to a S/PDIF BNC input, you need to use an adapter that has a built-in transformer to convert the 110 Ohm impedance that the XLR input has to the 75 Ohm impedance that the BNC input has.

Neutrik makes one that isn't too expensive.

I actually ordered the Canare one from the same place (this one). But seems to be the same idea as the one you linked. Hopefully that does the trick.

Okay Schiit Heads
Current setup is a Bifrost 2 OG into a MJ3 feeding the HiFiman HEK 2 non stealth. I also having the Bifrost into the MJ3 as a pre to the Xduo TA-26s feeding the HD 6xx.
Question, do I upgrade my DAC, or get more Headphones?
DAC considerations - Gungir2, Yigg GS2, or the Cyan2. I can't currently jump into a new Yigg.
Headphones - HD 800s, maybe a HEK 2S
More headphones!

(but don't listen to me, I just bought an Yggy A2 here in the classifieds...I had to get it out of my system!)

Great!

If I were starting all over with the wisdom I now have a G2 would be it. Period.
Edit: Why ? Because its as good as any of the dacs I have experienced or better and the price is in the sweet spot IMO. Made in USA. Great Customer Service.

I have gone thru many dacs, some bought, some loaned....all decent but as always I have my favorites for my ears..
Had the Bifrosts here for years, thought I would never give them up..gone.
Same with Brand X stuff, most all gone.
I have a Soekris 2541, a Holo Cyan 2, Schiit Modius E, all others gone.
Had Chords here, Chi-fi stuff etc..

All that said I am seriously thinking of ordering a G2 soon...tax time! LOL!
Then it will be "sell" time again for some...

I think if you really like the G A1, then keep it and just enjoy it...maybe get someone to loan you one to play with....

Happy Jan 2nd!
Alex

Brand X - criminally underappreciated band, started as a Phil Collins side project. I saw them live once, and as much as I love Bruford, Collins, and Peart - Kenwood Dennard is probably the single best drummer I ever saw. Although Bruford and Collins together w/ Genesis might have been a tad better. Tony Williams another great drummer too. On the pure rock side: Moon and Bonham not bad either. Grohl and Carey too.

Very helpful. Any G2 owners within driving distance of Lowell Ma that want to drop by - got dog, drink, food, decent system....

I've had every DAC in the lineup current and recent past (BF2 OG, 2/64, Gumby 1 and 2, MMB2, Modius, Yggy LIM & OG). Gumby 1 had to go back because I was getting issues from sample rate changes that many with the VCO clocks when the VXCO was unavailable (iirc). Gumby 2 is very good, and I probably do agree the bass is a little lighter and more controlled than the predecessor, although not to the degree the BF2 changed to 2/64, which I removed and sold the cards to after a month.
