Schiit Asgard 3 - Impressions Thread

I've had my Asgard 3 for two months now and I enjoy it. I pair it with my MMB2 and Loki Mini and get a lot of good sound out of them. I went from a Magni 3+ to the Asgard 3. My next step up is to improve on my Vali 2++. It might be a simple as getting a Vali 3. It's been getting a lot of love.

My little Magni 3+ at the office is now 4 years old and has recently developed some weird behavior: big popping at the left channel when plugging anything into the jack, and channel imbalance (-3dB in L). My work-around has been an attenuator -- also for the obvious reason of more granularity in the volume pot -- and somehow that voltage divider addresses the channel imbalance, but I fear that I should retire the little fella ASAP before it decides to play Kamikaze with one of my transducers.

Have been eyeing the A3 with the ESS card. The other option would be to replace the old amp with a new Magni to pair with an existing (and also old) Modi 3, of course. Interesting dilemma. Can't deny the 5-years warranty is very attractive for the A3.

Almost pulled the trigger today, by the way.

Is it better to run my 250Ω DT770 or my 80Ω DT770 on my Asgard? In terms of Asgard lifespan, musicality.

Why do these things (headphones) come in different Ω-age?

Asgard will have no problem with either. I have 600Ohm DT880s that run of it.

The Asgard is designed to handle headphones with a high impedance. The only decision you'll have to make is whether you use the gain switch or not. I run my 300 ohm HD580s and HD650s with relative ease on high gain. I also run cans with a much lower impedance and switch between high and low gain depending on how loud they play and how easy they are to control with the volume pot.

I sold my Asgard 3 when I bought my Vahalla 2. When I bought my silver Asgard 3 they were selling for $200 new and it was definitely the best money I'd spent on audio equipment going back to 1973. It's a great solid state headphone amp.

What has the Valhalla 2 got over the Asgard 3 that made you sell it? What cans are you using with it?
I've downsized, I have to two pairs headphones now, Sennheiser HD600 and Beyerdynamic DT880 600 ohm. It's simple, I like the way the Vahalla 2 sounds. I like the way it sounds with my high impedance headphones. I had sold my low impedance headphones by the time I had bought the Vahalla 2 so I cannot comment on the Vahalla's performance with low impedance headphones. I sold my Asgard 3 because it was sitting unused.
