Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (24-bit/192KHz)

It's a downmix. Don't think so that the Note 3 has a multi channel amp.

A downmix would requite a valid multichannel processing at the top of the signal chain.

My thoughts point into the following direction: a possibility to play 5.1 with a determined 5.1 to 2.0 processing like Dolby Headphone or much better the way a Smyth Realizer works, casted in a software algorithm.

Been using the Dragonfly for a couple of weeks and I can say it does improve the sound from the Note 3 a bit- mainly things sound cleaner without the etchiness the Note exhibits and a bit more overall fidelity. But the volume from the DF is not quite sufficient as the output from the Note 3 is too low- this is with DT770-32, X10 and K550- all are at max or maybe one notch below max volume for my normal listening levels in quiet environments.

What player are you using?

I have tried several- Poweramp, Neutron, stock, and Google Play- all the same output. Tried Neutron preamp gain to increase volume but added distortion.

USB Player pro got the best SQ while connected to a DAC, give it a try.

I have actually, there is no discernible difference between players, only how much or little the equalizers and/or bass boost add distortion and how effective they are. I actually find the Google player has better bass boost vs the others. Poweramp is great bass boost but reduces output when engaged.

How do you select USB audio out on the Note 3? I haven't been able to find an option in the settings.

That said, I think it actually sounds better than my old iPhone 4 directly from the headphone out, using my Westone UM3X. No audible hiss either (there was a slight hiss with the iPhone, none with the Note 3).

Other than the screen, am almost tempted to ditch my Note 3...

Apple's SQ has lured me back - to the 5S, sounds so much cleaner than the Note 3...

Not sure whether to be ashamed by that or not!

Buy a $99 Dragonfly and you'll have the screen and the SQ. But output is such that you'll want efficient phones.

True enough (didn't realise there was a V1.2!!)

Used the Arcam rPac with Fiio E12, combo sounds great but all far too big - should consider the Dragonfly again (had the original but sold it as it sounded a bit cold / hard for my tastes)...

Hmm...  More money to spend
