so is there still a new sennheiser flagship coming out at the end of this year? or is another brand?

Sennheiser is releasing a closed-back high end flagship between $1499-$1999, in october.
Another unnamed firm, but my guess is one of these three (Sony, Beyerdynamic, Audio Technica), is releasing a small-size headphone, or perhaps even a large IEM, which may finally rival our large open back headphones in sound quality and stage, due to a new technology or new design, from what nomax is hinting at.

I think that much is a given, given his raving about it being such a revolutionary game changer.
After his hinting at it not being a typical full-sized, open-back headphone, I'm honestly more excited at this point for the closed-back HD800 successor.

A closed back flagship makes sense but I hope they update the open back hd800 too. You would think after 6 years on the market there has been enough advances in technology to update the design.

yeah + backpack on your shoulders with a solid state amp for powering this thing. sounds very portable

The simplest piezo speakers are not that power hungry. When planars were all big and hard to drive, we wouldn't have thought something like the PM-3 would come along.
