Rogue Audio RH-5 Impression Thread

Started today off with the CBS-Hytron 5814 Black Plates, and man they sound fantastic in the RH-5 with my VC's! Everything just sounds so natural, and right. I am hearing little nuances more clearly, and the immersive factor is in full effect. The bass pounds when called for, and the dynamics I am getting with this tube are awesome. This tube is unique in that it combines transparency/detail, power, and finesse all at once, and I can't stop listening. :o2smile:
Sounds like this is the tube I need! I want the bass you describe. The RFTs don’t have it. I’m not disappointed with the RFTs by any means, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for these hard hitting CBS-Hytron’s

Somehow I would bet these tubes might match up well with the bass shy HD800s??

The Sylvania JHS 5814a Triple Mica Short Grey Plate Square Getter have the bass too. I would keep an eye out for either tube if you are looking for some killer bass. Both these tubes walk all over the RFT, when it comes to impact and sounding lifelike. The RFT have a bigger stage and cooler sound overall, but lack the upper bass/lower midrange bloom that these 5814 tubes have, which makes them sound so much more organic/lifelike.

Hmmmm “bloom” you say. Does that mean it’s not well defined but more boomy (technical term there). That’s what the RCA clear glass side square getter is like. The RFTs aren’t bass monsters but what’s there is very well defined/articulated.

Absolutely not what I meant. There is just enough bloom (otherwise known as warmth and what the good NOS tube are known for), to where it makes them sound organic and real. They have just as much or more detail in the mids and treble as the RFT but also have bass you can feel that is actually tight enough that it has detail and texture as well. A little tube bloom (warmth not boom) is a good thing if done right, and the Sylvania and CBS-Hytron 5814 both nail it in slightly different ways.

Gotcha. Thanks. I appreciate the clarification for me. I’m really still relatively new to the tube world. I’ve only been tinkering in it for about 2 years. Still learning.

Sure thing! I know there are a lot of crazy adjectives used in this hobby and I try to stay consistent with how I use them, but sometimes what I am trying to describe doesn't come through as well as I would like it to.

I think you would really dig either one of these 5814, and the good thing is they are way easier to find than those Funwerk Foil Getters. Don't get me wrong, the earlier Funkwerk foil getters are still outstanding tubes and are right up there with these 5814, with a different stage presentation and just a much detail.

@Wes S I found the Sylvania JHS 5814a Triple Mica Short Grey Plate Square Getter at TubeDepot. I have a matched set incoming! A little pricy, but I’ve bought from them before and it’s been very high quality. I’m excited to try them out!

Nice, I saw those listed myself and if I did not have 3 pairs already, that's where I would buy them from. These tubes have such a natural and well balanced sound with really good detail and punch, and I really can't see anyone not loving them.

Should have them for next weekend.

So…I just jumped in the pool too. Just got the ship notice from Tube Depot.
A harbinger???
No shipping notice for me, just purchase confirmation.

The only 5814 I have heard so far have been CBS-Hytron, Sylvania, and Raytheon. Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on those GE, and I've read some good things about them as well. The 5814 in general is known to be a step up from the 12AU7 in terms of performance, and so far all the ones I have heard have been outstanding. Also, they are really quiet and well built tubes, and the ones I have even been using are dead silent in my RH-5 as well as my Pendant. I really don't know why it took me this long to pull these 5814 back out of my stash, but man I sure am glad I did as I am really enjoying them in both my amps. There are quite a few different versions/brands of the 5814 and I plan to try as many as I can, and the really cool thing is they are quite cheap, and most of the more popular versions/brands are still quite easy to find.
