Esther Phillips- Home is where the hatred is. A great version of a Gill Scott Heron song, the Philips version came out on the soul-jazz label Kudu.

Did anybody give Miles Bonny a listen? Again, Lumberjack Soul is probably good to start for good, deep soul, and the other American stuff for more RnB less soul (less serious and involved singing etc. in favor of more beats)

Minnie Riperton. While know for her monster hit Loving You, and her incredible ability to sing high notes was a member of an earlier group, the group was called "Rotary Connection." The group was an experiment in adding some, at the time contemporary, psychedelic sounds to soul music. Here is one of my favourite tracks from them a heavy rework of the classic song "Respect."
