I have been hanging around on this forum a couple of days now, and I have an impression that most people her prefer "indie" (hm..don't like to use that word), pop/rock, elctronica, metal and stuff like that when it comes to music genres.

Most of my own record collection exists of albums within pop/rock, indie, jazz, electronica but I also enjoy high quality R'N'B/soul records now and then. Both old stuff(motown, stevie, stax,80's smooth soul and so on) and new artists (like Jaheim, R.Kelly, Raphael Saadiq...)

I hope and expect (!) that there are someone here with some recommendations to share

oh, and my recommendation is the new Maxwell album, it's perfect! Great for laidback, headfi listening sessions

I loved the Gabriela Anders album Wanting from 1999 perfect for headphones. LoKey? Back to the House was a great album 1993. Spacek - Curvatia is in my opinion the album that changed modern Soul.
Also loved Mint Condition , Basic Black , d'Lavance , Identity Crisis , Randy Jackson , Guess , Howard Hewitt , Double Action Theatre , B-Brown posee , Joes debut album , Troy Johnson , Here and Now and NinexI.

Al Green Call Me is one of my favorite soul records of all time. But I'm guessing you have that already. If so, how about the Spinners? The A One of a Kind Love Affair compilation is brilliant.

Al Green's Call Me is flat-out genius…a concept record about missing someone that has Hank Williams and Willie Nelson covers? Kray-zy!

Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On

Bill Withers - Still Bill

I've been following Raphael Saadiq since he was in Tony Toni Toné…search out House Of Music.

Geez, if I start talking about soul records I'll be here all night, but get the Sam Cooke comp Portrait Of A Legend if you don't have it, and plenty of Atlantic Records-era Aretha Franklin. I'm currently in a Spirit In The Dark phase.

Oh, and check out Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun.

I would also reccomend Shuggie Otis, check out:

Another vote for the prodigious Shuggy Otis. His Inspiration Information, a minor masterpiece, was re-released a few years ago on Luka Bop.

And since Shuggy is straying into Funky Town, have a listen to Parliament's funky--but still soulful--Chocolate City.

Have you cats heard the version of "Strawberry Letter 23" that was actually a hit for the Brothers Johnson in the '70s? Quite amazing…consider that your next assignment.

I agree, not very well known is he??

One of my neo-soul favorite records is Jaheim - Ghetto Love! What a voice!

Another vote here for Shuggy Otis.

I really like Plantlife's 2008 release, Time Traveller. It's longish and has pastiche like quality about it. Very clever iMO.

Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Plantlife: Time Traveller

I also really like Joe Bataan's 2005 release Call My Name. He been around since the sixties but I am not familiar with his earlier stuff.

You must be a War fan. Domino released an 8 album box set earlier this year.
