Review: Questyle Audio QP1R - With Multiple Headphone and IEM Pairings

Dec 31, 2015 at 3:16 AM Post #706 of 7,142
  Hi

So unlike all other hi-end DAPs the QP1R cannot be used as a DAC? That's ridiculous! Won't be getting one on that basis. The FiiO X3ii at £150 has this function!

Darren

No DAC functionality is a well established fact for a while now. If someone wants to hook a DAP, which also has DAC functions in his/her laptop or desktop PC/MAC then the QP1R is not the way to go. If someone wants a High-end Class A amp desktop rig sound in their pocket then QP1R is the only answer, as far as I'm concerned. Right now it is the best sounding DAP period as on 31.12.2015.

Hi

I don't doubt the quality of the QIP1R. That's why I was ready to purchase one, but I do need the DAC functionality, as I have sold my iFi micro iDSD. Not having a go, as I am really disappointed.

Does anyone know the official reason the function hasn't been included bearing in mind all the competition has this ability, and if there are any plans to add this ability?

Regards

Darren
Initially it was going to be released without any EQ adjustment mechanism as well, until a few of us asked Gary (now retired) of Questyle and Questyle responded.

Later it was informed by Questyle that they will not be adding the DAC functionality by FW updates due to some hardware constraints.

Frankly,it is great at what it does and as a user for over 12 weeks now, I can say that it served the purpose for which it was made at the first place. The additional DAC functionality was always a bonus and after hearing the SQ of the device one will forget about additional features and get immersed in the natural organic sound.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I believe that DAC functionality is a must for this level of DAP. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are something altogether different, and I would regard these functions as a bonus. Questyle has dropped the ball on this one, and should have looked at their direct competition and provided a similar specification DAP.

It might be the best sounding unit at this price point, but I am unable to purchase it because of this omission and am really disappointed because of this.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking at other than Questyle?

Regards

Darren

It's only a must if you need it. I want a DAP to play music from internal memory and micro sd cards so the QP1R is ideal.
I have owned most of the top DAPs and it surpasses them all in terms of sound quality.
Personally I have never once had the itch to use any DAP as a DAC for my MAC.
Would suggest you buy a Chord Mojo for that.

Hi

Can't figure out what to get for my Grado RS2E : Questyle QP1R ? Astell & Kern 100ii ? Cowon Plenue 1 ? All the same price, love the design of Astell & Karn, not fond of the clicking wheel, DAC function would be nice but...which one delivers the best sound ? How would you guys rank them ?

Many thanks in advance and happy new year from Paris, France

Hi

The X5ii and Mojo combination is an option.

I have been thinking though, maybe I'm too blinkered on this DAC functionality thing. I have two 200GB SanDisk MicroSD cards already, giving me 366gb after formatting. My whole FLAC library is only 291GB. So with the internal memory and 366gb's worth of MicroSD memory, I have plenty of space for now and the future without needing the Laptop for anything else than a place to backup my music. Does this sound about right.

Also, in the future when bigger MicroSD cards become available, do you think they will work on the QP1R?

Regards

Darren

There is no reason larger capacity cards will not work.
I think the size of libraries the operating system can cope with is more relevant.
I search and play by folders (albums) so this does not worry me. The bigger the capacity the more albums I can load.
I have 7 terabytes of FLAC files so tend to remove cards periodically and change music.
My biggest complaint is at the moment you cannot delete folders via the QP1R itself on the fly and I forget what albums I have played and want to replace. One for future firmware upgrade.

I wonder where that came from?

  Hi

Can you view each card or both cards combined in "Artist" view from A to Z, starting with ABC and ending in ZZ Top, then click on each artist to see all their albums? This is the way I do it with the X5.

Regards

Darren

Yes and no. Unless someone knows a setting or a trick that I'm not aware of, yes you can see both cards and internal for Artists in alphabetical order but no you can't see individual albums. With the current FW, you see all albums for that Artist combined in numeric order - track1, track1........ track 2, track 2............ Hopefully this will be corrected in the next FW update. File view shows Artist > Albums > Tracks in order but you can only see the card you've selected, so it's not a complete overview of your library.
