Review: Denon AH-D7000 vs. Ultrasone PRO-900
Feb 14, 2010 at 7:26 PM Post #16 of 48
Is $799 for denon 7000 is a good price? I am currently looking at denon 7000, Audio technica w5000, and senn hd650.. Would you consider 7k are more towards warm or bright sound?

$799 off ebay? If you live in the states, call J&R and see if you can negotiate to bring it down to 600 or below. I including others bought 'em for 600. I even saw one dude getting his for 550..makes me ponder why I didn't try that.

I've seen $799 from aafes website. Free shipping And no tax. J&R listed for $999 isn't it? Would they go low as $600 if I call them? Thank you.

You should be able to after some haggling. Free shipping in the states I believe. Not sure if it still applies when you order via the phone though. Yes, you have to telephone 'em. Say stuff like a lot of head-fi members got theirs for x amount and I have to pay taxes here blah blah blah you know the usual stuff.

As far as Markl mods go, IMO a stock D7000 still outperforms a MD5000. The drivers in the 7000's are just more powerful and go higher and deeper with tighter bass control. That being said, a used MD5000 at about $350 is a better value than a D7000 for who some have spent $700-800 or more. Of course the 7000 can also be mod'd to further raise the bar.

I also reco J&R if low price is what your after.

Good to hear, lmswjm. I am currently loving my MD5000 that has been fully markl-modded with J$ pads. It offers the best experience I have heard so far on headphones. As best I can differentiate, it is better than the HF-2 and RS-1 for most genres, although comparing open cans to this semi-semi-closed one may be a moot exercise. Regardless, I am very happy and would be very surprised if the D7000 "brings it" much stronger than what I am hearing.

Excellent review! Just what I have been looking for. Many thanks indeed!

When you consider the MSRP of the headphones, it really gives credit to how well Ultrasone's perform for their asking price...

I have read many times the pro 900 are VERY detailed, are they noticeably that much better than the denons?

Anyone have an idea if the Denons can be had for around 600-700 in Canada? Or shipped to Canada?

Absolutely true on the cost/performance value of the Ultrasones. Killer cans.

As far as your detail question goes, that's tough because once you get to a certain level of detail, IMO, it comes down to personal preference. Cans with low detail are generally poor listens, but ones with exceptionally high levels of detail can be too analytical to some people.

So, once you've reached the level of detail that both the Denons and the Ultrasones possess, there's not really a "better" choice. As I said in the review, I think the 900s are a more detailed can. They were designed for studio use, and thus reveal more flaws, etc. than the Denons do. Depending on your listening preferences, you may want a more "forgiving" can, which I feel the 7000s are in this comparison.

In my opinion, my picks would go like this:

Ultrasone PRO 900/ALO-780
Ultrasone ED8/9

Denon MD5000/LA7000

I wouldn't get any other Ultrasone nor Denon than those. Do not know why I have come to this conclusion though

The D2000 pretty much NEEDS to be modded and by the time you finish modding it, it will end up costing more than a used MD5000 anyway. MD5000 is what I would get to experience the Denon sound and upgrade to the LA7000 later down the road if i absolutely love the MD5000. I have got the ALO-780 already so I have no need for the PRO 900. I would be better off getting the ED8 or 9 to justify upgrading

Tried Edition 9 today, left me totally emotionless.

Edition 9 is probably one of the last headphone I would see leaving someone emotionless. Its often hate or love although in my vicinity its mostly love

No offense, but are the ALO 780 REALLY that comparable to the pro 900? Is the mod and *snicker* cable really going to make that much of a difference?

I supposed you could always mod the pro 900... :O

Many will argue that the PRO 900 need a mod! I'm in the "kinda necessary" boat. I think they sound very unique stock, but not overly fantastic all the way through. Any modding really help with some of the extremes this headphone displays. I found the highs far too piercing (easily modded) as well as the prominent bass (also, fairly moddable). Great headphones none the less, but I think the PRO 900 need more modding than the 780, just my insight though.

EDIT: I also found very little sounding similarities in the PRO 900 and HFI-780, other than the pronounced highs and mids. Beyond that, I would have thought it was a completely different brand. I can definitely understand if someone would love the PRO 900 and hate the HFI-780, or vice versa. The PRO 550 are much more in line with the 780's sound than the PRO 900's.
