Replacing Ipod internal amplifier?
Oct 12, 2004 at 6:09 PM Post #16 of 21
Anyone have a schematic of the ipod's amp section. I have access to state of the art SMD soldering and desoldering equipment. Maybe a part number of a possible replacement amp / cap combo. I have a 20 and a 40 gig 3g ipod, I would try it on one of them. I would not know where to get this info.

Let's keep this thread alive!!

Good news! I found a picture of the IPOD main PCB board that includes labels and the numbers of all the chips! Click
here

Its a bit grainy, but it says that the IPOD uses a Wolfson #WM8721 stereo d/a with headphone amp.

While someone is at it, maybe they can replace the RAM as well with a bigger value chip. It would save the hdd from spinning up when playing flac files, wouldn't it?

Man, that is one scary looking board to try upgrades on. Talk about densepack!

On a related topic, is it possible to get digital feed out of the ipod?

If not in stock config, would it be possible to get digital out with a modification?

An outboard d/a and amp would be very interesting.

You can get digital out without a mod. FiiO offers this: http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-L3-Line-Cable-iPhone/dp/B003UCESP8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1295573726&sr=8-3

If you're looking for a digial out + portable amp on the cheap you can get the L3 and FiiO's E5 both on amazon for ~$30 + s&h.

Is there really a need to dig this thread out of the grave?

Plus, that is a LOD for analog / line-out, not digital out.
