2D = index finger, 4D = ring finger
2D:4D = finger length ratio

2D:4D varies between men and women.
the literature suggests there is a correlation between 2D:4D and prenatal exposure to testosterone.
shorter 2D is the more masculine characteristic.

2D:4D has been characterized as modern day palm-reading...can be used as indicator of attractiveness, risk for disease, sexual orientation, promiscuity, etc...

what is your 2D:4D? [i'll start ... male, 0.95]
is 2D:4D important?
If you believe it is an indicator of [prenatal] hormonal levels, do you use it to characterize others?

my 2D:4D ratio is 0.85, and I'm male. (3 3/8" and 4")

Is that a good thing?

Do you have 2 or more older brothers? literature suggests this correlation.
0.85 is very low for 2D:4D, 0.95 is typical for males
did you take measurement on the palm side [on right hand]?

right-hand 2D:4D is more sensitive to fetal androgens than the left-hand ratio.

I took ruler, put it between 2D and 3D, then read off length of 2d. Repeated with 4D5D crevice.

And only one older brother.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1613066.stm - Finger length heart attack clue
this BBC article suggests "The longer your ring finger, the more protected you are against heart attack"
"Below 0.9 an individual is unlikely to have a heart attack early in life. Above 1.00 the risk climbs"

[in literature] 2D:4D seems to correlate to androgen/testosterone levels OR "maleness"
lower 2D:4D correlates to higher androgen levels...which may indicate need for more partners, higher sperm counts, etc...

http://www.globalideasbank.org/site/...hp?ideaId=2340 - Length of fingers and feet are predictive
researchers say that "homosexual men display several hyper-masculine characteristics, including a greater number of sexual partners than heterosexual men", more circulating androgens and larger genitalia.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/pro...=UTF8&n=507846 - Digit Ratio: A Pointer to Fertility, Behvior, and Health

Manning presents evidence for how 2D:4D correlates with traits ranging from sperm counts, family size, musical genius, and sporting prowess, to autism, depression, homosexuality, heart attacks, and breast cancer, traits that are all linked with early exposure to sex hormones. [Amazon editorial review]

http://www.alaina.org/tigerbunny/200...r_secrets.html - finger secrets

From Manning, some characteristics that may be associated with digit ratio:

Males, Low 2D:4D ratio (the ring finger is longer than the index finger):
More fertile
Higher lifetime reproductive success
More aggressive and assertive
Greater proclivity toward homosexuality/bisexuality
Higher musical and sports aptitude

Males, High 2D:4D ratio (the index and ring fingers are of about equal length):
Higher risk of early heart disease

Females, Low 2D:4D ratio (the ring finger is longer than the index finger):
Greater proclivity toward homosexuality/bisexuality
More aggressive and assertive

Females, High 2D:4D ratio (the index and ring fingers are of about equal length):
More fertile
Higher lifetime reproductive success
Higher risk of breast cancer

By that ludicrous chart, I'm ludicrously het. I've always thought that uber heterosexuals were unafraid to cultivate many gay friendships, but perhaps that idea is merely convenient in my case.

And now to turn to something rather more pragmatic:

As a pianist, I measure my fingers in terms of their *span*. I'm able to play parallel tenths; I have also read through Scriabin's minor ninth etude (the one he destroyed his hands by over-practicing) and didn't find it difficult in the short-term.

Are there any other pianists in our midst whose span is roomy?

I'm no fan of Rachmaninoff, but I do recall a 70s DGG recording of some foont who could play the Second Concerto without excessive pedaling or rippling chords because his span was uncommonly wide. Can anyone recall the name of the pianist in ques?

My natural span is 9 keys. If I have to play ten, I can do it by pulling my hand off the keyboard and using the keys edges, but it's precarious and requires more concentration. I would honestly prefer a comfortable 8 key span. When I'm sight reading, I hit 8.5 keys if I'm tired sometimes.

This is old news.
I've known for a couple of years now that I'm supposed to be at least bi-sexual. Especially my right hand is supposed to like fondling a female of the species. Still haven't found the perfect woman though, and I doubt I ever will. Can't see the appeal. Maybe that's because I'm left handed
