Age old question I know. I've scoured different forums and spent nights on google but i cannot get a definitive answer. My accumulate knowledge says:

Rega P1: more upgrades available, better tonearm, more "intense" sounding. Pro-ject: sounds better out of the box, wider soundstage, better build quality.

I can get either for the same price so cost isn't a concern. can someone give me a straight answer?

I'd be suspicious of any statement as general as "turntable A has a wider soundstage than turntable B". That doesn't really make sense without *at least* talking about cartridges or something.

Build quality, availability of spare parts, upgrade path and speed stability would be my main concerns.

I'd probably go with the Rega, so you can get a drop-in better tonearm and platter later. That said, I'd go Technics SL1200 with Rega arm over that.

Either is a good choice if you want a new relatively stress free introduction to vinyl. Build quality is much of a muchness and the tonearm on this Rega isn't the RB-250 but a cheaper version not sold separately. Pro-Ject have improved their arm over previous versions of the debut so there is really not a lot in it.

These are not the kind of decks which are really designed to be upgraded very much if at all though, and if you plan on doing so in the very near future then you would be better off saving up for something better to start with.
As mentioned the Technics SL1200 is the cheapest deck you can buy new today with much potential in this direction.

You're like the guy in the no country for old men

Anton Chigurh: What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: Sir?
Anton Chigurh: The most. You ever lost. On a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: I don't know. I couldn't say.
[Chigurh flips a quarter from the change on the counter and covers it with his hand]
Anton Chigurh: Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Call it?
Anton Chigurh: Yes.
Gas Station Proprietor: For what?
Anton Chigurh: Just call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Well, we need to know what we're calling it for here.
Anton Chigurh: You need to call it. I can't call it for you. It wouldn't be fair.
Gas Station Proprietor: I didn't put nothin' up.
Anton Chigurh: Yes, you did. You've been putting it up your whole life you just didn't know it. You know what date is on this coin?
Gas Station Proprietor: No.
Anton Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Anton Chigurh: Everything.
Gas Station Proprietor: How's that?
Anton Chigurh: You stand to win everything. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Alright. Heads then.
[Chigurh removes his hand, revealing the coin is indeed heads]
Anton Chigurh: Well done.
[the gas station proprietor nervously takes the quarter with the small pile of change he's apparently won while Chigurh starts out]
Anton Chigurh: Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter.
Gas Station Proprietor: Where do you want me to put it?
Anton Chigurh: Anywhere not in your pocket. Where it'll get mixed in with the others and become just a coin. Which it is.

Since your in Hamilton I recommend checking out the Goldring GR2. Brand new you can pick them up for 600 dollars. Scott at Arcadia Audio has them.
Welcome to Arcadia Audio

It has a Goldring 1012GX. The table is very quiet.

If you want it used then there is a person in waterloo selling theirs for 500 dollars
Goldring GR2 turntable $500 OBO - Canuck Audio Mart

All in all its a nice table. Sounds really nice with KT88 or 300B based amps on my studiolabs.
