I can't comment on the Rega driving the 990's, but i have one that i have used with my AKG K340's. It's a very nice amp. Warm and sweet. I'm sure the 990's are an easier load for the Rega than my K340's. But they drive them pretty well.

I haven't tried the Rega with the DT990, but I've hooked it up with the DT770, DT880, W1000 and HD650, and compared it with my MAD Ear++ tube amp.

I think the Rega works better with darker sounding headphones like the Sennheiser HD650. Also, the easily driven W1000 doesn't like the high gain of the Rega, as you barely get to move the volume knob before it's too loud.

For the DT990, I actually think something like the PortaCorda MkIII suits it better than the Rega Ear. I tried the DT770 with a MkIII, and it sounded very good. Or even better, on of the more expensive Cordas.

But I honestly think that the Beyer DT770/880/990 likes tubes the best. I still haven't found any amp that make them sound better than the MAD. However, I haven't tried that many amps...

I tried the Rega Ear with Senn555, 600 and 650. Maybe I had a bad one but it sounded flat, dull, lifeless and distorted. I got a Pimeta with 627 op amps and it was like night and day difference. Just got a WooAudio 3 tube amp yesterday and it is night and day different/better than the Pimeta. Now we are getting somewhere. FWIW the Rega has a dual channel, single chip op amp. The Pimeta has 3 op amps in it and only cost about $100 more. If the Rega Ear I had was as good as headphone listening got, I would have quit right then and there. Maybe OK as an entry level but there is way, way better sound out there.
