I haven't been around here for a long time, but I recently came back to research a bit before replacing my old portable headphones (sony ex71). I had given up on moving up the audio food chain because I didn't listen to my DT770's much, and the good in-ear monitors I tried isolated too much. In a sad turn of events, I was using my ex71s at work, and Mission bookshelf speakers at home. I ended up listening more to $7 computer speakers and car speakers than anything else. Live music was the only hi-fi I had until my ex71's died.

I ended up buying the klipsch x10's (and Swan m200mkIII), and am rediscovering the depth, clarity, and detail of my old music (+ all the new music). Falling back in love with Radiohead, Super Furry Animals, Fionna Apple... Anyway, Thanks Head-fi!

I used to come to the music forum to see what new music was worth checking out, but I have been finding my music from pandora lately. In the last 2 years, I must have missed some stuff. Anyone want to come forward with some recommendations?

Music Preferences:
Hip hop - Nas, Talib, Kanye, Lupe, Mos def, Common
Rock-ish - Keane, Mutemath, Muse, White Stripes, Beck
Electronic-ish - Radiohead, Justice, MGMT, Daft Punk
Other - OAR, G Love, Anthony Hamilton, Dream Theatre

Not sure if my music tastes fit yours, but here's my favorite artists for various genres

Rap - Blackalicious
Folk - Iron & Wine, Cat Stevens
Metal - Dream Theater (but you already listen to them, so check out Liquid Tension Experiment, their instrumental offshoot project)
Pop - Andrew Bird (Wikipedia calls him baroque pop, whatever that means lol), Sufjan Stevens (baroque again?), Stars
Rock - Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Pink Floyd (you probably have already checked them out),
Indie - Mountain Goats, Modest Mouse
Other - Cat Power, Ratatat

If you like pop, have you checked out the two Jim Noir releases? One is self-titled and the other is "Tower of Love." Frighteningly catchy but don't look for deeper meaning in the lyrics. Still, too much fun to ignore.

I don't know who Jim Noir is, but I find AC Newman and The New Pornographers to produce exceptionally catchy pop as well

Along with those I would also suggest Tegan & Sara (although it seems more and more apparent that any band with two names together with & in the middle seems to work well with in alternative/indie) Belle & Sebastian, and Camera Obscura. I would say though the bands I mentioned tend to be more on the poppy side of alternative/indie.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've seen Tegan & Sara live twice, and really liked them. Any album to try first?

Already have The Craft from Blackalicious. Really liked it, but have heard that their other albums aren't as good. comment?

Surfjan is also really fun, but I haven't heard anything from him since Illinois and his christmas stuff. Is The Avalanche good?

I'll give Jim Noir, Andrew Bird, and Mountain Goats a try. Probably Peter Bjorn & John too

Metalcore doesn't do it for me, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra was ruined by youtube.

The Craft is my least favorite by them actually. Nia is my favorite, then Blazing Arrow, then The Craft. My friends like Blazing Arrow the most.
