I am looking for a cheap way to record guitar demo's, ideas and such while I am away from the computer. I want something without a lot of setup time so I can record ideas quickly. Currently I am thinking about a minidisc. Does that seem like the best idea or are the more effective alternatives to look into?

There are some hard disk players that record. The NJB (at least the original first gen I had) had WAV recording so you wouldn't have to worry about lossy compression is that's a concern. Archos has a few models. The MD route certainly is a good option though.

yeah... minidisc is pretty portable. but you probably want to also be able to mix your music afterwards.... so, you should also get a decent sound card too.

or, if you want an all in one, guitar center is selling the roland 840? i think that's it.... for $500. it's very good deal. you get 8 channels i think of mixing and recording. you don't need any extra equipment, besides some monitors... or hell, your headphones.

or of course, there are the models Ari suggested.

these all-in-one type studios are very popular now. you should seriously consider one. though, you're gonna need a mic too. ....go to this web site and check out the mic section:

very good site. most of the people there try to maximize their money.... so if you don't have much cash, listen to their recommendations. these are real musicians there.

I suppose another reason I was looking at a minidisc unit was because I can also it use like a cd/mp3 player. This would seem to be an added bonus, but I will definitely look into more of a recording/mixing unit and check over at homerecording.com. Thanks.

If you choose to do electric guitar recording the guitar rig mobile from native instruments is a great product. I use it myself as my only DAC and a interface.

Olympus do a handheld device with stereo mics and SD card recording storage that is supposed to be good. They used to be big in handheld dictaphone type recorders so know the market reasonably well. When you do get back to the computer I can recommend Line 6's GX interface for simple guitar recording.
