Recorded in 16bit/44.1 KHZ but playback in 24bit/96khz??

For the USB ports (all 2.0) - I saw that they were merely enabled - but I didn't see that each one was set at hi-speed - and since the Yulong wasn't plugged turned on - I didn't see it listed as a device on the USB listings. My connection is via USB too - so there is no wireless connection that I am using.

If you connect to the internet through a USB modem, your motherboard might not be managing power well enough to feed all ports properly, which in that case an externally powered USB hub would help.

But for now just try things after the driver update and powermizer settings.

Well - afraid to say - still have the glitching - after about 12 minutes....Next stop - finding all those programs that don;t need to load up on the start menu -

Do you recommend i still play with buffer latency settings? And ought I to still upsample or simply playback at the original sample rate??

I could buy the self-powered USB and then plug in most the USB plug ins that are currently plugged into my PC - like my wireless mouse etc...

Could it be Internet Security absorbing power etc...?

Is it worth power setting my CPU on XP to background services or programs (default setting)....?

Given that you work with audio, you would be the best judge of which sample rate and bit depth would work best for you.

Security software does interfere, and that's why dedicated workstations have tight security, not using that kind of apps that interfere with I/O.

Since you have many devices plugged on your USB ports, getting an externally powered USB hub could be a workaround for that.

I'm going to try again in the morning - with the internet turned off and with my internet security disabled and see what happens then....and then I will get the powered USB  - I actually don't have many USB ports in operation but I do have a wireless mouse and an external CD/DVD rewrite BUT that is almost always off...and was never on during playback.

I have a very old wireless keyboard that uses a special box to enable wireless connection - time I bought a new one - who knows how much that old this is draining my CPU ...

Getting wired peripherals would help. Merely having them plugged on, despite not being in use, does make an impact. Also, after you do more testing, some chipset drivers could be installed, though the result does depend on each specific case, there have been known cases of people getting both lower and higher latency.

The biggest mistake you're making is thinking those things affect CPU performance. Forget about that. I already told you that you have more than enough processing power to handle audio tasks. What's really the concern is how both hardware and software might interfere with clean, fast audio paths in your computer.

If only you installed Windows 7...

Test 1 -

Internet totally switched off - at 400ms - Much better playback - no glitching until over 25 minutes.

Test 2 -

Internet totally switched off - at 1000ms - Glitching after 20 minutes.

So the latency settings are not related...

At least I know the Internet is causing some of the issue...

Should I download the Latency DPC Latency checker to see where the spikes are coming from?

In terms of chip-sets - I really have NO idea about installing those or what exactly I would need...

I should mention that my motherboard - came with a realtek sound card embedded in the motherboard itself- I had to disable that in order to use my X-FI Sound Blaster sound card - however - the Sound Blaster card never worked very well.

I have the PCI express x15 and that is for my graphics card. I have the PCI express X1 used for my sound card - and the sound card never worked entirely well - the software would not install properly a year ago saying. Sound Blaster told me that sometimes when we use two PCI express ports - close together there can be issues - with preferred performance going to the graphics card....my mother board only has two PCI express ports so....that's that...

Anyway - may be there are some clues in what I have just written that may help to get a proper chipset driver...

I'm sorry for the late response but I've been offline without chance of getting here sooner. Just sent you a PM.

I should be able to do a test tomorrow lunch time and let you know if anything changed since USB drivers were updated. Now off to bed - cheers!! I ought to be online tomorrow too if you are around...

Well, here's another way to look at it.  If you take a 10 ounce bottle of water and then pour it into a gallon sized pitcher, will you be drinking more water than the what you poured out of the 10 ounce water bottle?

Or could the water be tainted by the pitcher?

And your suggestion would be?? Perhaps don't drink any water??
