Yup, I had issues at first. You're supposed to use the lowest latency necessary. If too low, you may have issues like what you are experiencing. Hopefully the issue is only that.

Recorded in 16bit/44.1 KHZ but playback in 24bit/96khz??

Cheers! so you had popping/cracking issues with USB playback? Or was it an issue of upsampling? Just worried that my Yulong D100 is the problem/
what os are you using ? Assume you are using a pc right? What else are you doing when playing music?
If you are using itunes, try a different player like foobar. Upsampling in itunes should not cause popping. It could be that you are using too much resources with it on and itunes.
There are no issues at all until after about 5 or more minutes of playback - which tells me it is a latency issue because the pops and glitches become more and more...
My setting is on 33ms (33.000ms) which is default for itunes/quicktime..on Windows XP
I shall start at 100 and go up in 50 increments until it goes away totally...
But out of curiosity - why is 1000ms the limit...I read that foobar offers between 500-2000ms in its settings...500ms being the lowest.
What I want to avoid is noticeable delay in playback - I am very knowledgeable about delay in recording purposes but not for PC audio playback. I read that regarding PC audio - which in not my area of expertise - the amount of ms has to be set really high - for delay to become noticeable - but what is high?? 1000ms? 2000ms??

If a high latency setting cure the issue, who cares how high it is. Unlike recording where folks are monitoring in real time, there is no need in playback. The only issue we have is the time it takes when you push play to when the music starts.
Cool - I also learned that there is a way of setting in BIOS to give more priority to certain USB ports...any idea on how those can be done?
RE: latency - I also read that the bigger the sample rate and bit rate - the bigger the CPU usage so a higher latency is needed to provide smooth playback

Another question: If i have to settle for lower level playback to avoid these glitches - is it better to drop the sample rate down to say 48khz first? or do I also need to drop to 16 bit too? What is the advantage of using higher sampling rates?
Anyone out there??

Higher sample rates are more cpu intensive than higher bit depth.
If you need to lower audio settings in order to have more free cpu cycles. Set things to 24bit/48KHz instead of 24bit/96KHz.
What are your system specs? I ask as I've been able to have glitch free playback at high settings years ago with legacy hardware.

Cheers mate - I'm on Windows XP - my sound card is Audigy x-fi. But there are no issues with that. It's when I use my new USB DAC - Yulong D100. The music plays fine for about 5/10 minutes then progressively gets worse with glitching...It's gotta be a latency setting. Thing is itunes only offer upto 99.000ms - the default is on 33.000 which is what I have it on at the moment. I've had no time to set different latency settings and test them over a period of time - I was waiting for this weekend to do that when I have time...
I also prioritized itunes in the task manager so that may help. In the Quicktimes preferences under Audio - it offers the Safe option (Wav only) - but I chose the Direct option because my files are ALAC files (mp 4) not Wav files...
Sorry - Im new to computer Audio - my strengths of knowledge are in hi-fi...

It's ok, we are all constantly learning
But when I said system specs, I also meant hardware specs, cpu, memory, hdd, gpu, those things.
There are two pieces of software that are quite recommended, first being foobar2000, and the second being Windows 7.
Also, have you actually tested for latency spikes?

Intel - Core 2 Duo CPU
E7500 @ 2.93Ghz
3.25 Gb RAM
My PC is custom built last year with an Asus mother board: P5P43TC PRO with PCI Express
My ALAC files are on a separate drive that is totally dedicated to the itunes library. Half of the drive is used at the moment. I don't want to change player - I would like a plug-in for itunes/quicktime with ASIO - all my audio files are ALAC...
I have Windows 7 on my notebook. But for other reasons so far - I prefer XP...
To be honest - I ought to be able to sort this out...I have the time at home now to experiment on this in a few hours...see what happens...

Well, you have high enough specs for them not to be the cause for any severe issues, like the ones you're having.
Also, what is your gpu? That is important, and part of the specs.
Windows 7 is better for audio, not to mention how foobar is leagues ahead of itunes. With the exception of the smart playlists, I don't see the point on using itunes, as there are tons of ways to connect any iDevices you might have to a computer.
What are the reasons you have to prefer XP?

How do you check my GPU? Alot of the programs I currently use for music editing are more compatible with XP...
How high are your buffer/latency settings ( amount of ms)??

Also - to be honest - I a little skeptical of upsampling to 96khz if the recordings were originally sampled at 44.1 khz...I've read a lot of forums posts saying that there are benefits and those that say there aren't.

Go to the device manager, under display adapters, or open display properties.
I find that VERY strange as virtually all DAWs work perfectly with Windows 7.
Right now I have it set at around 10ms, but if need arises I can significantly lower it. Though most of the time I'm using it for playback usage, so I can increase it at will.
I hope you know that XP is much less efective at handling modern hardware, like what you have...
