I have a Sony NWZ-A728 and am looking for some decent headphones. I am currently using a pair of Koss PortaPros. I mainly listen to Downtempo on my headphones. I have a thing for beautiful female voices (Bjork, Beth Orton, etc).

Initially I thought that the ATH-AD700 would be my best bet. I don't care if they are new or used, I just don't want to pay more than $100. Any others I should consider? I don't really know of any place to test them out except for BesyBuy which only carries a couple of Sennheisers.

Thanks

I would recommend the Sennheiser HD 238's, they are $88 on amazon, or can be found refurbished on ebay right through darkmart for $50. I think these should sound great for what you listen to.

I'm inclined to recommend the M50's because they sound so great with that kind of music, but they definitely improve with some amping. However they still sound great un-amped, you just won't get all of their full potential. I'm assuming you'll be running them un-amped? If that's the case, then the Shure SRH440's might be better. The SRH440's will be bass light compared to the M50. Haven't heard the AD700's so I can't comment on them.

In my experience, the HD280 does better with female voices than my M50S. They're both very nice cans in their own way. It's like pepsi (HD280) and coke (M50), pepsi is cheaper so it tastes better

.

And BTW, ">$100" looks like you're looking to spend more than $100

Thanks

I will probably be buying a CMOY amp or PA2V2 or some other budget amp.

The Sony MDR V6 can be good. There is the new Sennheiser HD380 which is very well priced for headphones that are a step up from the HD280. They are so well priced I'm tempted to buy them.

Why are most of the recommendations are for closed phones? How about Denon AH-D1001? They seem to be highly rated.

Because even though open headphones sound better in general, that doesn't mean they sound better at your price point.

And the Denon D1001's are fantastic.

If you look at the description of those headphones from darkmart it says that they have been refurbished by Sennheiser. I think Sennheiser refurb's the headphones that are sent back within warranty, and they probably sell to third parties to sell instead of selling them on their own website.
