one more question: my music is all mp3. would the hf5 be a waist using it to listen to an mp3 track on an ipod?

As long as they're at least 192kbps but 256kbps to 320kbps would be better.  I've listen to some that were 128kbps and you can tell its poor quality but most of whats out there now should be around 200kbps so you should be fine.  The HF5's are great and for under $100 plus the sound isolation you get its really a no brainer, imo.

most iems will block out normal bus noises easily, you should just get some iems that suits your music taste not which isolate the most.

unless its for planes, you should be fine with most iems

I actually own MC5 and I'm pretty fond of them. Last 6 months I've been using Klipsch X10i as my portables, but I'm going back to MC5's.

Lifeless? I wouldn't say so. Accurate - yes. And comfortable.
