They can be either 2.1 or 5.1, although I'd prefer 2.1. My headphones are gettin' itchy.

Check out the Creative gigaworks 2.0 set (yes it is 2.0 but apparently has great bass)

Maybe also try logitech z2300 or some klipsch speakers (might have to get 2.0)

No contest:

It shows MSRP at $150 but in reality it's about $80-$100. I think the SQ is very good even compared to my HF-1 or HD650 setups (see sig for details). A little bass heavy perhaps, but the sub control is adjustable. Also I have my sub corner loaded so that might be part of my bass issue (no other place for it in my PC room).

I second the HK soundsticks II. We bought a set at costco and they are significantly better than a pair of Klipsch 2.0s that have now been delegated to the office.

Monsoon Planar Media if they still existed...

I don't know why they went out of business. I have one set, and they are very detailed and offer excellent imaging (although the sweet spot is very narrow). They are much better than those Logitechalteclansingcreativecraps

I think the consensus is one guy has soundsticks and another has heard they were good but hasn't actually tried them. Also MCC had the ProMedia 2.0, not 2.1 (with the sub and fat amp). Not sure that's an equal comparison.

Google some reviews, even the worst ProMedia 2.1 I read review rated it very highly.

Don't mess around with c*r*a*p. Hie yourself over to eBay, find and bid on a pair of REAL powered speakers. I am speaking of course, of the Proton 300/301 combo, or a pair of 301's, or a 300 and 301 both in powered speaker mode. I have a 300/301 set running off my iMac, and I am VERY happy with them. They're a stereo pair, shielded, and [probably] no subwoofer will be needed. Did I mention that they are biamped? Yes, I mean each driver has an anp, and if I recall rightly, each speaker tops at 100 watts.
