For the cheap cables, many of you mentioned the cat5 cable from radioshack. Is that the LAN rj45 cable? If it is, can I get it from somewhere else (office depot, walmart, or my computer part trask box)? Or there is something special about the radioshack one. Thanks!

CAT5 is fine, from anywhere. CAT 5 is a spec, as long as its rated for that spec, ti shouldn't matter.

Thanks!

Does the sound improve much (15-20%) after recabling with the cat5? I have both ksc75 and ur40.

Based on my experience a KSC35 that had a broken cable, I would also suggest double checking the polarity of the drivers, if you can. My KSC35's were both wired inverted and sounded a little better corrected.

Silver Plated Copper

I always get mine from navships on eBay - http://stores.ebay.ca/Johns-Silver-T...Q3amesstQQtZkm

It's cheap and works great, less than $10 for 50 feet, but remember, you need 4x the length you want the cable to be (2 wires for signal and 2 wires for ground).
The best for headphones would be 24AWG STRANDED, I was dumb enough to order some 22AWG but it was much too stiff to work with, the 24AWG was just perfect. People say thinner guages like 28 or 26 work, but I've noticed that the 24AWG is soft and bendable enough to use very easily and not bulky at all like the 22AWG was.
